Electricity consumption in Ukraine, taking into account in-process losses in power grids, decreased by 5.8% (by 3.121 billion kWh) in January-April 2020, compared to the same period in 2019, to 50.810 billion kWh, the Ministry of Energy and Environment Protection has told Interfax-Ukraine.
Excluding in-process losses, electricity consumption over the first four months decreased by 5% (by 2.166 billion kWh), to 40.769 billion kWh.
The country’s industry, excluding technological losses, reduced electricity consumption by 6.6%, to 16.288 billion kWh. In particular, metallurgical industry consumed 8.938 billion kWh (9.7% less compared to January-April 2019), fuel industry some 1.099 billion kWh (7.2% less), machine building industry some 1.172 billion kWh (17.7% less), chemical and petrochemical some 1.307 billion (17.1% more), food and processing some 1.408 billion kWh (3.6% less), construction some 670.5 million kWh (2.1% less), others some 1.694 billion kWh (1.1% more).
In addition, agricultural enterprises consumed 1.120 billion kWh (2.6% less), transport some 2.145 billion kWh (9.8% less), developers some 354.6 million kWh (8.3% less).
In January-April 2020 the country’s population consumed 13.108 billion kWh (0.9% less), households some 5.101 billion kWh (8.8% less) and other non-industrial consumers some 2.653 billion kWh (3.9% less).
The share of industry in total electricity consumption over the first four months fell from 40.6% to 40%, while the share of the population grew to 32.2% from 30.8%.
In April 2020, electricity consumption, taking into account in-process losses, decreased by 7% (by 835.6 million kWh) compared to the same month of 2019, to 11.086 billion kWh, excluding in-process losses it fell by 7.8% (763.1 million kWh), to 9.28 billion kWh.
Ukraine increased electricity exports by 15% (by 319.4 million kWh) in January-April 2020 compared to the same period in 2019, to 2.449 billion kWh, the Ministry of Energy and Environment Protection has told Interfax-Ukraine. Electricity supplies from the Burshtyn thermal power plant (TPP) energy island to Hungary, Slovakia and Romania increased by 24.7% (by 351.2 million kWh), to 1.772 billion kWh.
Electricity supplies to Poland increased by 24.2% (by 106.4 million kWh), to 546.7 million kWh.
Electricity supplies to Moldova amounted to 130.3 million kWh, which is 51.5% (138.2 million kWh) less than in January-April 2019.
Ukrainian electricity was not exported to Belarus and Russia.
However, electricity exports fell by 60% in April 2020 compared with April 2019 (by 355 million kWh), to 237.9 million kWh.
Thus, Ukraine imported 1.705 billion kWh of electricity, in particular 1.012 billion kWh was supplied from Slovakia, some 408.6 million kWh from Hungary, some 152.3 million kWh from Belarus, some 78.3 million kWh from Romania and some 53.4 million kWh from Russia over the first four months.
In addition, under technological flows related to interconnected operation of the United Energy System of Ukraine with the energy systems of neighboring countries (taken into account under the contracts of state-owned enterprise Energomarket) some 19.25 million kWh of electricity were imported from Russia and some 250,000 million kWh were imported from Belarus over four months of 2020.

According to information from the Ukrmetalurgprom association, electricity consumption by metal enterprises over this period amounted to about 2.75 billion kWh (94% from January-March 2019).

Excluding in-process losses, electricity consumption over the period decreased 3.6% (by 1.179 billion kWh), to 31.965 billion kWh.
The country’s industry, excluding in-process losses, reduced electricity consumption by 5.8%, to 12.429 billion kWh. In particular, metallurgical industry consumed 6.746 billion kWh (9.5% less compared to January-March 2019), fuel industry some 849.9 million kWh (6.6% less), machine building industry some 959.9 million kWh (14.2% less), chemical and petrochemical some 2.029 billion kWh (24.2% more), food and processing some 1.088 billion kWh (1.2% less), construction materials some 483.4 million kWh (2.1% less), and others some 1.283 billion kWh (0.8% down).
In addition, agricultural enterprises consumed 854.8 million kWh (4.2% less), transport some 1.708 billion kWh (6.8% less), and developers some 282.5 million kWh (7.6% down).
In January-March 2020, the country’s population consumed 10.407 billion kWh (0.9% up), households some 4.138 billion kWh (6.7% down), and other non-industrial consumers some 2.145 billion kWh (1.3% down).
The share of industry in total electricity consumption in January-March 2020 fell from 39.8% to 38.9%, and the share of the population grew to 32.6% from 31.1%.
In March 2020, electricity consumption, taking into account in-process losses, decreased by 7% (by 948.2 million kWh) compared to the same month of 2019, to 12.611 billion kWh, excluding in-process losses it fell by 3.9% (417.8 million kWh), to 10.374 billion kWh.
Electricity consumption during quarantine, from March 12 to March 31, 2020, decreased by 7.5% compared to the same period in 2019, to 7.911 billion kWh, Ukrenergo transmission system operator reported to Interfax-Ukraine.
The average temperature for the indicated period was 5.6 degrees above zero compared to the temperature 4.9 degrees above zero in 2019.
Within the first week of quarantine, March 12-18 (the average temperature was 5 degrees above zero), Ukraine consumed 2.838 billion kWh, which is 6.8% less than within the same dates in 2019 (at an average temperature of 3.7 degrees above zero) and 0.9% higher than within the previous week, March 5-11 (8.5 degrees above zero).
Consumption within March 19-25 amounted to 2.786 billion kWh (at temperature of 4 degrees above zero), which is 6.6% lower than within the same period in 2019 (at temperature of 5.5 degrees above zero) and 1.8% lower than within the first quarantine week, and 0.9% less than the week before quarantine.
According to the results of the last six days of March (8.2 degrees above zero), Ukraine consumed 2.287 billion kWh, which is 9.2% lower than within the same period in 2019 (5.4 degrees above zero).
In general, according to recent data, electricity consumption in March at an average temperature of 6.4 degrees above zero was 12.414 billion kWh, which is 7.2% less than on March 2019, when the average temperature was 4.7 degrees above zero.
Earlier, Ukrenergo transmission system operator predicted that electricity consumption in Ukraine in March amid quarantine measures could decrease by 8.2% compared to the same period in 2019. The operator said that in addition to quarantine, which restricted the work of a number of enterprises in different industries of the economy, electricity consumption will also decrease due to such seasonal factors as warm weather and a decrease in heat supply.
