Ukraine increased production of aquaculture products in 2024 by 22%

11 March , 2025

Ukraine increased the production of aquaculture products in 2024 by almost 22% – to 18,621 tonnes, Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food Vitaliy Koval reported on Facebook.

“Aquaculture is one of the important components of food security, which forms a stable supply of high-quality fish products to the Ukrainian market. Its development is another step within the framework of the Agrarian Ministry’s policy on import substitution. Our goal is to ensure that products purchased in Ukraine by state institutions are of Ukrainian production. This will strengthen the domestic market, ensure employment in this area and support national producers,” he wrote on Telegram.

The minister named Cherkasy (4,400 tonnes), Lviv (1,543 tonnes), Khmelnytsky (1,517 tonnes), Kirovohrad (1,456 tonnes) and Sumy (1,403 tonnes) regions as leaders in aquaculture production.

The main fish species grown in Ukraine are carp (8,896 tonnes), silver carp (4,434 tonnes), grass carp (637 tonnes), pike perch (1,854 tonnes), salmon (396 tonnes), catfish (273 tonnes), pike (211 tonnes), and sturgeons (72 tonnes). The production of edible caviar in Ukraine in 2024 amounted to 4,281 kg.

“Ukraine, with significant water resources and a favorable climate, has all the opportunities for further development of this industry to integrate into global trends. After all, today aquaculture provides the production of more than 50% of fish products in the world,” the minister of agricultural policy summarized.
