Yuzhny seaport (Odesa region), the largest seaport of Ukraine in terms of transshipment, increased cargo transshipment by 18.7% in January-March 2019 compared to January-March 2018, to 11.6 million tonnes.
According to the Ukrainian Sea Ports Authority, during this period the port increased the handling of exported cargo by 39.8%, to 8.973 million tonnes, decreased the handling of imported cargo by 31.98%, to 1.203 million tonnes, transit cargo handling fell by 10.22%, to 1.422 million tonnes, and the port increased handling of coastal freight 2.86-fold, to 31,930 tonnes.
According to the types of cargo, the port in January-March 2019 increased the transshipment of liquid cargo by 9.13%, to 1.077 million tonnes, increased the transshipment of dry bulk cargo by 19.45%, to 9.207 million tonnes, and increased the transshipment of packaged goods by 22.16%, to 1.315 million tonnes.
Container handling amounted to 52,000 TEU (a more than threefold increase).
Yuzhny port was founded in 1978. It is located on the Adzhalyk firth and is the deepest harbor in Ukraine. The length of its berths is around 2.6 kilometers.

MV Cargo plans to start assembling a ship loader for the grain terminal of global trader Cargil at the Yuzhny seaport in October 2018. “The berth is almost a half ready, and the silos are at the finish line. In autumn they will be able to accept first grain. In October we will start assembling the ship loader,” the company said on its Facebook page. The company said that as of the second half of September, the project to build a grain terminal was implemented by 85%, and the terminal will be capable of storing 290,000 tonnes of grain.
The length of the berth is 428 meters, depth near the berth is 15 meters and depth of the approaching canal is 16 meters.
“Our terminal is one of the deepest grain terminals in Ukraine and the Black Sea region, and, if necessary, the depth of the berth can be increased to 16 meters and the approach canal – to 19 meters. The length of the berth wall and depth will allow us to accept large-tonnage vessels, and modern equipment – to load a ship like Post-Panamax in two or three days,” MV Cargo said.
It is planned that after the launch of the terminal, the terminal will ensure transshipment of 10% of grain produced in Ukraine.
ASSEMBLING, MV CARGO, ODESSA REGION, SHIP LOADER, YUZHNY SEAPORT
State-owned enterprise (SOE) Ukrainian Sea Port Authority and the TIS Group have signed a memorandum of understanding, providing for the implementation of infrastructure projects at the Yuzhny seaport (Odesa region), according to a posting on the website of the Infrastructure Ministry. The memorandum envisages the uniting of efforts of the SOE and the private company to develop Yuzhny port’s infrastructure.
The authority seeks to conduct dredging works in the internal canal leading to the water area of berths of the TIS Group (from berth 18th to 22nd), a water approach to the U-turn area and a part of the operation water areas of berths 21st and 22nd to reach the designed depth of 16 meters.
In turn, TIS will conduct dredging works near its berths: 18, 19 and 20 to 19 meters and 21 and 22 – to 16 meters. After these dredging works, TIS plans to do its best to boost cargo handling by 10-15 million tonnes in 10 years.
