Arthritis Expert Identifies Daily Habits That Help Keep Knees Healthy

25 October , 2026

According to Experts Club, regular walking, strength training, and avoiding prolonged inactivity help maintain knee joint function and reduce the impact of factors associated with the development of osteoarthritis. At the same time, even pronounced changes visible on X-rays do not always mean that a person should give up physical activity. This is discussed in an article in The Washington Post.

American orthopedic surgeon Howard Lux, who specializes in knee joint disorders, considers excessive restriction of movement to be one of the most common mistakes made by patients with knee pain. In his opinion, a diagnosis of osteoarthritis or meniscus damage detected during an examination does not necessarily mean irreversible deterioration of joint function.

As the specialist notes, movement plays an important role in nourishing cartilage tissue. As the joint is loaded and then unloaded, synovial fluid circulates within the cartilage, ensuring the delivery of essential nutrients. Physical activity also helps maintain the muscles that stabilize the knee.

Lax recommends starting with a manageable level of exercise, such as a daily 10-minute walk, and gradually increasing the duration to 30–60 minutes. In addition, strength exercises should be performed to strengthen the leg muscles and support overall metabolic health.

At the same time, the doctor emphasizes that discomfort during movement does not always indicate additional joint damage. However, the nature and acceptable level of physical activity must take into account the patient’s individual condition, the severity of symptoms, and the recommendations of the treating specialist.

The article also notes that osteoarthritis cannot be viewed solely as a result of mechanical wear and tear on the joints or aging. The condition of the knees can be influenced by metabolic disorders, particularly diabetes, as well as other factors related to metabolism and inflammatory processes in the body.

According to the expert, maintaining physical activity helps preserve the strength, balance, and mobility necessary for daily life for longer. If conservative treatment methods do not provide sufficient symptom relief and quality of life is significantly reduced, knee replacement remains one of the possible options.

Thus, the main principle for preventing functional deterioration of the knees lies in regular physical activity and muscle strengthening, rather than completely avoiding exercise at the first signs of pain. In cases of severe pain, swelling, or a sudden decline in mobility, a medical evaluation is necessary before increasing physical activity.
