Germany’s state-run development bank (KfW) could provide EUR 60 million to Ukraine for the completion of construction of a breakwater and dredging works at the Odesa seaport and EUR 90 million for overhaul of H08 Zaporizhia-Mariupol highway and restoration of H32 Pokrovsk-Bakhmut-Mykhailivka road.
“Negotiations with KfW on a loan: EUR 60 million to complete the construction of a breakwater in the port of Odesa and EUR 90 million to overhaul H08 Zaporizhia-Mariupol roads,” Deputy Infrastructure Minister of Ukraine for European integration Viktor Dovhan wrote on his Facebook page.
At the same time, according to a posting on the website of the Infrastructure Ministry, Minister Volodymyr Omelyan confirmed Ukraine’s interest in borrowing from the Federal Republic of Germany in the amount of EUR 150 million (the KfW loan) provided for the restoration of transport infrastructure in the eastern regions of Ukraine. In particular, the Infrastructure Ministry plans to implement the following projects: the construction of a breakwater and the implementation of works to deepen the water area of the port of Odesa; repair works at the national road N08 Boryspil-Dnipro-Zaporizhia (through Kremenchuk)-Mariupol on the Zaporizhia-Mariupol road section and the restoration and improvement of the transport and operational condition of the H32 Pokrovsk-Bakhmut-Mykhailivka state-sustained highway.
According to the Infrastructure Ministry, Germany also expressed interest in participating in the modernization of the electric locomotives of JSC Ukrzaliznytsia and in electrifying the railways, in particular, in the south of Ukraine, near the ports.
In addition, as a result of negotiations with Germany, Ukraine will receive an additional 20,000 bilateral permits for road haulage, which will be valid until the end of January 2019.
In addition, the parties agreed to consider the possibility of increasing the quota of permits for 2019.
Jysk Ukraine LLC (Kyiv), developing the JYSK furniture and household goods store chain belonged to Jysk Group (Denmark), will open a new store in Khmelnytsky, expanding its chain in Ukraine to 46 stores. The company said in a press release that the store with an area of 1,043 square meters will be opened on December 6 and be located at 21, Kamianetska Street in the Lybid Plaza shopping and entertainment hotel complex. It will be the third store of the JYSK chain in Khmelnytsky and 46th in Ukraine.
“We are opening the third store in Khmelnytsky, which indicates a great demand for JYSK brand goods. The first two stores appeared in the premises of the Furshet store and the Woodmall shopping center. The new JYSK will operate in the 3.0 format in the city center,” Executive Director of JYSK in Ukraine Yevhen Ivanytsia said.
According to the report, the store will have furniture, mattresses, home textiles and decor. As reported, Jysk Ukraine LLC plans in 2018 to open up to 12 new outlets in the country.

The main pipe enterprises of Ukraine in January-October 2018 increased production of pipes from ferrous metals by 7.62% compared to the same period in 2017, to 941,600 tonnes, including 97,500 tonnes in September. The Ukrtruboprom association told Interfax-Ukraine the enterprises of the association in January-October 2018 raised production of pipes by 16.7%, to 677,800 tonnes, in October to 68,300 tonnes.
Khartsyzsk Pipe Plant (Donetsk region), located in the government uncontrolled zone, remained idle in January-October 2018, while in January-October 2017 it made 3,400 tonnes of pipes. Pipe production at Interpipe Nyzhniodniprovsky Pipe Rolling Plant in the period rose by 13.6% compared to January-October 2017, to 240,900 tonnes (22,100 tonnes in September), Interpipe Novomoskovsk Pipe Plant increased output by 17.9%, to 95,300 tonnes (10,200 tonnes), while Interpipe Niko Tube raised production by 25.2%, to 309,400 tonnes (32,800 tonnes). Dnipropetrovsk Pipe decreased pipe production by 13.5%, to 13,400 tonnes, making 1,100 tonnes in October. Production at Centravis grew by 7.2%, being 16,400 tonnes of stainless pipes (1,900 tonnes).
The share of brokers and agents on the Ukrainian insurance market, which today reaches slightly over 2%, could significantly grow in 2019 in relation to the economic necessity and European requirements for insuring major risks, Director of Oakeshott Insurance broker (the U.K.) George Grishin said at a meeting with representatives of large business held in the residence of the British ambassador to Ukraine. According to him, if in Germany, through intermediaries, 72% of insurance contracts are concluded, in the United States, Canada – 95% in life insurance, in Italy – 76% in risk insurance and 44% in life insurance, in the U.K. – 70% and 48% respectively, while in Ukraine only 2%.
“An effective and widely available abroad tool for effective protection of possible risks, such as insurance brokerage, is undervalued in Ukraine. We have high hopes that with our active support, advocacy and activities, trust in brokers will increase in 2019 and their share of the insurance market will increase significantly,” Grishin said.
Director of Oakeshott insurance agency (Kyiv) Yuriy Hryshan said that the European directive regarding insurance intermediation notes its pivotal role on developed markets, which passed the evolutionary way from the large number of insurance companies providing similar services to fewer insurers with wider offers. The major part of insurance products is sold via insurance intermediaries. They, unlike the insurance company, which, in fact, is a supermarket with a standard set of services, make products tailored to specific customers.
Speaking about the perception of the insurance market by foreign partners, Grishin said that many cannot understand how a company that, in fact, is not engaged in insurance, is in the top five Ukrainian insurance companies in collecting premiums. This is known to all and this has been going on for many years.
The main reason for underdevelopment of the Ukrainian insurance market is distrust of both consumers and public agencies to it. “There are no investors, and no demand both for insurance products and insurance companies on the market,” he said.
He said that among the main disadvantages of the market are a large number of insurance companies which quality of assets does not correspond to the tasks set by the market; unresolved relations between company owners and top management; low level of supervision, the main reason for which is current legislation. Speaking about the market prospects in the future, Grishin said that since Ukraine is aimed at European integration, in the future Ukrainian insurers will have to meet European requirements. In particular, the size of the charter capital for risk insurance companies should be EUR 3 million, for life insurance companies – EUR 5 million.
According to Hryshan, the key principles in composing any insurance contract are: determining the insured amount in the event of an insurance event, designating all possible risks that can lead to financial losses, full confidence in the insurer, since much depends on the human factor on the financial market. “Major risks should be well placed, otherwise money is thrown out the window,” he said. According to Grishin, all European insurance is built on trust and openness between the insurer and the client. Most of any insurance contracts are customer data about themselves. “If I send a contract to a client for filling out and I see that his part about personal data and details about doing business is not filled, I know that foreign insurers will refuse to cooperate,” he said.
