Freight traffic in Ukraine rose by 5% over first four months

Freight transport volume in January–April 2026 increased by 5% compared to the same period in 2025, reaching 104.4 million tons, while passenger transport decreased by 7% to 658.8 million passengers, the State Statistics Service reported on Tuesday.

According to its data, 47.9 million tons of cargo were transported by rail in the first four months of 2026, which is 1.7% more than in the same period last year, while freight turnover fell by 8.7% to 28.5 billion ton-kilometers.

Road transport volumes for January–April 2026 increased by 18.1% to 45.9 million tons, while freight turnover rose by 9% to 13.9 billion ton-kilometers.

The largest number of passengers in January–April 2026 was transported by road—315.1 million, which is also 3.8% more than in the same period of 2025.

A 3.2% increase was also recorded in the metro—to 108.6 million.

At the same time, the number of passengers carried by rail decreased by 13.8%—to 16.9 million, by trams—by 28.4%, to 72.1 million, and by trolleybuses—by 18.5%, to 145.9 million.

As reported, freight traffic in January–March 2026 decreased by 0.3% compared to the same period in 2025—to 76.1 million tons, while passenger traffic fell by 8.6%—to 478.5 million people.

Freight traffic suspended on M-15 Odessa-Reni highway

Freight traffic has been suspended on the M-15 Odessa-Reni highway, Oleg Kipper, head of the Odessa Military Administration, said on Friday.

“Given the current situation in the region and in order to eliminate the consequences of enemy shelling in the Odessa region, the Odessa Regional Defense Council decided on December 19, 2025, to suspend freight traffic on the M-15 Odessa-Reni highway. We ask transport company owners and drivers to take the above information into account when planning freight transport routes,” the Telegram message said.

Earlier it was reported that on Thursday, traffic on the M-15 Odessa-Reni highway (to Bucharest) was temporarily blocked in the Odessa region, in the territory of the village of Mayaki. According to the local publication Dumskaya, the highway was blocked due to strikes by Russian drones. It was also reported that near the bridge near the village of Mayaki, a UAV hit a car, killing a woman and injuring three children.

The State Border Service reported restrictions on traffic to certain checkpoints across the state border with Moldova due to enemy air attacks. The Moldovan side reported the temporary closure of the Mayaki-Udobnoe-Palanka and Starokazachye-Tudora checkpoints.

On May 1, Hungary introduces restrictions on movement of freight transport

On May 1, 2025, Hungary will introduce restrictions on the movement of freight transport throughout the country.
The Embassy of Ukraine in Hungary officially announces that, in connection with the public holiday declared by the Hungarian side, restrictions will be imposed on the movement of trucks and combined transport vehicles with a maximum permissible weight of over 7.5 tons on the territory of Hungary on Thursday, May 1, from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.

Restrictions on movement of freight transport in Kyiv

Restrictions have been imposed on the movement of trucks in Kyiv, the press service of the Kyiv Patrol Police reports on its Telegram channel.

“Temporary traffic restrictions apply to heavy vehicles with a total weight of more than 24 tons, an axle load of more than 7 tons and apply to both entry to Kyiv and movement in the city. The duration of the restriction may vary depending on the temperature. So follow the latest information on our Telegram channel,” the statement said.

The police reminded that the main purpose of such measures is to preserve the road surface, which is destroyed due to the heavy traffic of heavy vehicles in hot weather.
