Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko and his brother, ex-boxing champion Volodymyr Klitschko, have filed suit against 1+1 TV to defend their honor and dignity. “Not a day goes by when the top-rated TV channel says unkind word of the Kyiv mayor. Lies, manipulations, fabricated information. I already said that I would defend my honor and dignity in court. My brother and I have filed a suit against the channel, which flings mud at us. They decided not to stop at me and already have targeted my brother Volodymyr,” Vitali Klitschko said during a press conference in Kyiv on Friday.
Klitschko said, “We are not talking about an attack on freedom of speech,” adding that the head of the channel (Servant of the People Party member of parliament candidate Oleksandr Tkachenko) “is a contender to head of the Kyiv City State Administration.”
Klitschko said campaign had been launched against him. He said the channel’s coverage about the new pedestrian-bicycle bridge in the center of Kyiv and restoration of the Shuliavsky overpass are examples of slanted coverage.
As reported, 1+1 Media Director General Oleksandr Tkachenko, who was elected to parliament on the Servant of the People Party list, has refused to comment about the possibility of his appointment to head of the Kyiv City State Administration.
The Office of the President of Ukraine has asked the Cabinet of Ministers to submit a request for the dismissal of head of the Kyiv City State Administration Vitaliy Klitschko, press secretary of the Prime Minister Vasyl Riabchuk said.
“We’ve received such an appeal, now it is being processed in the prescribed manner,” Riabchuk told the Interfax-Ukraine news agency.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko has signed a Memorandum with the French company “Veolia Central & Eastern Europe S.A.” on cooperation in the field of solid waste management, the press service of the Kyiv city state administration has reported. “Kyiv is committed to working with reputable international companies with successful experience in implementing projects in the field of waste management. The Veolia Group is one of the world leaders in developing solutions for managing water supply systems, waste and energy. Therefore, I am pleased to announce that today we are signing a Memorandum of Cooperation with the French company Veolia Central & Eastern Europe S.A.,” Klitschko said.
The mayor of Kyiv noted that the capital has clear plans for a gradual departure from the technology of dumping garbage – both from an outdated and environmentally dangerous methodology.
In July, the city authorities intend to launch pilot projects on the separate collection of municipal solid waste in the capital.
“We plan to install up to 3,000 containers for individual fractions – plastic and glass. We met with the carriers of garbage and offered them to develop and implement a pilot project of separate collection in the territories where they work. It is very important that these are different models proposed by enterprises and we will determine the most effective ones,” he added.
The plans of the mayor include developing utility-type waste sorting, transferring of recycled materials for recycling, and also he plans to create a garbage processing complex with equipment for efficient processing of organic and other fractions.
“We plan to build a waste recycling complex, which will have a total processing capacity of 700,000 tonnes per year and will include a sorting stage. We plan to place this waste recycling plant next to the Energia plant, which will be made ecologically safe,” Klitschko said.
The Veolia company expressed hope that cooperation with Kyiv would be effective.

It is planned to build a new incineration plant in Kyiv within the next two or three years, according to the information department of Kyiv City State Administration, with reference to Kyiv mayor Vitali Klitschko. “Rubbish is the problem of not only of Kyiv, it is a problem of the whole country. Now we have one incinerator plant in the capital – Energy. We need a new incineration plant. Such a plant should be built within two or three years,” Klitschko said on the air of the Snidanok z 1+1 (Breakfast with 1+1) TV program.
According to the mayor, almost 1.2 million tonnes of garbage accumulate in Kyiv every year.
He stressed that a strategic decision had already been made to abandon the practice of dumping waste and begin to process it.
“We have studied in detail the experience of other countries. The competitive commission is already working, a tender for the construction of an incineration plant has been announced,” he said.
According to the mayor, the capacity of the planned plant should be more than 420,000 tonnes of waste per year. Landfill No. 5, which will be closed in future, has approximately the same capacity.
“Soon, work will begin on the reconstruction of landfill No. 5. The dams will be strengthened, the capacity of the filtrate processing equipment will be increased. We will strengthen the landfill, install a degassing system and then close it,” Klitschko said.
