According to Worldsteel, August saw an increase in steel production compared to August 2023 in most of the top ten countries, except for China, Japan, Russia and South Korea.
The top ten steel producing countries in August are as follows: China (77.920 million tons, down 10.4% by August 2023), India (12.285 million tons, up 2.6%), the United States (7.048 million tons, up 0.7%), Japan (6.870 million tons, down 3.9%), and the Russian Federation (5.8 million tons, down 11.5%), South Korea (5.465 million tons, down 2.2%), Turkey (3.146 million tons, up 13.8%), Brazil (2.963 million tons, up 7.3%), Germany (2.874 million tons, up 0.5%) and Vietnam (1.793 million tons, up 1.5%).
In August, Ukraine increased steel production by 15% compared to August 2023, retaining its 20th place in the Worldsteel ranking.
In total, in August 2024, steel production decreased by 6.5% compared to the same period in 2023 to 144.834 million tons.

In July this year, Ukrainian steelmakers increased steel production by 17.9% year-on-year to 709 thousand tons from 602 thousand tons, but decreased by 3.5% compared to the previous month, when they produced 735 thousand tons.
At the same time, Ukraine took 20th place in the ranking of 71 countries that are global producers of these products, compiled by the World Steel Association (Worldsteel).
According to Worldsteel, in July, most of the top ten countries, except China, Japan, Russia and South Korea, recorded an increase in steel production by July 2023.

In total, in July 2024, steel production decreased by 4.7% compared to the same period in 2023 to 152.849 million tons.

Overall, in 7M2024, steel production decreased by 0.7% y-o-y to 1 billion 107.235 million tons.
At the same time, Ukraine produced 4.583 million tons of steel in 7M2024, up 33.6% from 3.430 million tons in 7M2023. The country ranks 20th in January-July.

In January-July this year, Ukrainian steelmakers increased production of total rolled products by 28.4% year-on-year to 3.728 million tons from 2.903 million tons, according to preliminary data.
According to Ukrmetallurgprom, steel production increased by 33.6% to 4.583 million tons and pig iron by 21.2% to 4.089 million tons in the period. In July, the company produced 588.6 thousand tons of rolled products, 708.9 thousand tons of steel, and 621.4 thousand tons of pig iron, compared to 571.5 thousand tons of rolled products, 734.7 thousand tons of steel, and 628.6 thousand tons of pig iron in the previous month.
As reported, in 2023, Ukraine increased production of total rolled products by 0.4% compared to 2022 to 5.372 million tons, but reduced steel production by 0.6% to 6.228 million tons and pig iron by 6.1% to 6.003 million tons.
In 2022, Ukraine reduced production of total rolled products by 72% compared to 2021 to 5.350 million tons, steel by 70.7% to 6.263 million tons, and pig iron by 69.8% to 6.391 million tons.
In 2021, the company produced 21.165 million tons of pig iron (103.6% compared to 2020), 21.366 million tons of steel (103.6%), and 19.079 million tons of rolled products (103.5%).
In May this year, Ukrainian steelmakers increased steel production to 738 thousand tons, up 26.5% year-on-year (583 thousand tons) and 3.2% month-on-month (April, when 715 thousand tons were produced).
At the same time, Ukraine ranked 20th in the ranking of 71 countries that are global producers of this product, compiled by the World Steel Association (Worldsteel).

In January-March this year, ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih Iron and Steel Works (AMKR, Dnipro region) increased steel production by 93% year-on-year to 278 thousand tons.
According to the company, compared to the fourth quarter of last year, iron ore concentrate production amounted to 1.775 million tons versus 1.283 million tons (38% more).
Blast furnace coke production in January-March 2023 amounted to 245 thousand tons compared to 211 thousand tons (up 16%), pig iron – 403 thousand tons compared to 392 thousand tons (up 3%), steel – 278 thousand tons compared to 250 thousand tons (up 11%), rolled products – 262 thousand tons compared to 230 thousand tons (up 14%). Production growth compared to the first quarter of 2023 ranged from 50% to 94%, depending on the type of product.
In March 2024, compared to March 2023, production of iron ore concentrate increased by 52% (from 427 thousand tons to 651 thousand tons), blast furnace coke by 50% (from 56 thousand tons to 84 thousand tons), pig iron by 27% (from 109 thousand tons to 138 thousand tons), steel by 61% (from 77 thousand tons to 124 thousand tons) and rolled products by 57% (from 74 thousand tons to 116 thousand tons). Production volumes also grew year-on-year, with iron ore concentrate up 14%, blast furnace coke up 9%, pig iron up 19%, and steel and rolled products up 61% and 59%, respectively.
These results were achieved despite Russian attacks against energy infrastructure and the resulting power outages, the press release said.
The first quarter of 2024 also reflects gradual progress in restoring the company’s production capacity.
“We plan to continue our production development program, in particular, to approach 50% utilization of our steelmaking capacity in the near future. At the same time, the stability of energy supply remains a significant factor in the successful implementation of our plans,” said Mauro Longobardo, CEO of AMKR.
“ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih is the largest rolled steel producer in Ukraine. It specializes in long products, including rebar and wire rod.
ArcelorMittal owns the largest mining and metallurgical plant in Ukraine, ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih, and a number of small companies, including ArcelorMittal Berislav.
Mittal Steel Corporation acquired a 93.02% stake in Kryvorizhstal in an open tender on October 24, 2005 for UAH 24.2 billion at a starting price of UAH 10 billion, after which the plant was renamed Mittal Steel Kryvyi Rih and later ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih.
Global stainless steel production in 2023 increased by 4.6% compared to 2022 to 58.444 million tonnes, while production declined in all major regions except China, according to a press release from the World Stainless Association (formerly the International Stainless Steel Forum (ISSF)).
According to the information, in Europe last year, stainless steel production decreased by 6.2% to 5.902 million tons by 2022, and in the United States – by 9.6% to 1.824 million tons.
In Asia (excluding China and South Korea), stainless steel production decreased by 7.2% to 6.880 million tons, while in China it increased by 12.6% to 36.676 million tons.
Other regions (Brazil, Russia, South Africa, South Korea and Indonesia) recorded a 5.2% decline in production to 7.163 million tons.
As reported, global stainless steel production in 2022 decreased by 5.2% to 55.255 million tons. At the same time, in Europe in 2022, production decreased by 12.4% to 6.294 million tons, and in the United States – by 14.8% to 2.017 million tons. In Asia (excluding China and South Korea), stainless steel production decreased by 4.9% to 7.411 million tons, while in China it fell by 2% to 31.975 million tons.
Other regions recorded a 9.1% decline in production to 7.557 million tons.
