The Embassy of India in Kyiv in cooperation with the Pharmaceuticals Export Promotion Council of India (Pharmexcil) and the Indian Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association (IPMA) will hold an annual business seminar in Ukraine to promote and demonstrate the potential of India in the pharmaceutical manufacturing sectors, Indian Ambassador to Ukraine Partha Satpathy has stated at a press conference at Interfax-Ukraine. “Pharmexcil is the Pharmaceuticals Export Promotion Council of India. The main task of this organization is to unite all important pharmaceutical manufacturers in India. The council cooperates with the government, represents the interests of manufacturers in exports, in particular brings pharmaceutical products in compliance with the requirements of the WHO and the importing country,” the ambassador said.
President of the Indian Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association (IPMA) Dr. Menon, in turn, said that Pharmexcil plans to present several projects in Ukraine.
“Pharmexcil wants to find partners in Ukraine in the field of Ayurveda, clinical trials and create a joint venture for production of medicines,” he said.
The Indian ambassador noted that India is the third largest exporter of pharmaceutical products to Ukraine following Germany and France in terms of value, while Indian pharmaceutical companies supply high-quality products at a very good and competitive price.
State-owned enterprise (SOE) Spetstechnoexport is boosting defense cooperation with India and opening its second representative office on the largest defense market of the South Asian region. The press service of the company reported on Tuesday that the representative office of Spetstechnoexport opened in October in Nashik, India, will provide operational and effective cooperation with Indian partners, including the implementation of the new arrangements in the defense cooperation sphere signed by Ukraine in 2018 with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL).
According to the report, the new arrangements with HAL foresee expansion of defense cooperation in the aviation cluster, in particular, the supply of defense systems for Indian helicopters, joint research and the developments, establishment of production of specific aviation systems in India.
Spetstechnoexport engages Ukrainian defense enterprises in cooperation with the HAL, in particular the Lviv State Aircraft Repair Plant, the Odesa Aviation Plant, SOE Institute for scientific research Storm, SOE Kharkiv Machine-Building Plant FED, the Kharkiv Aggregate Design Bureau, SOE Novator, Radionix LLC and others.
The possibility of closer communication with foreign partners allows increasing the volume of cooperation, the company said. This year, Spetstechnoexport has almost tripled the volume of supplies of defense products to the needs of the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited aircraft division compared to the level of 2016.
Spetstechnoexport has an opportunity to take part in tenders for joint modernization of radars P-18 and ST-68, as well as air defense systems, such as ZSU-23-4 Shilka, P-125 Pechora and others under new arrangements with BEL.
The press service said that during the DefExpo 2018 international defense exhibition in India, Spetstechnoexport signed new contracts in the aviation sector with the total cost of about $20 million.
Exports of Ukrainian agrarian products to European countries in January-February 2018 increased by 28.1%, or by $224.7 million, and amounted to $1.025 billion compared to the same period of 2017, the Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food reported referring to the deputy minister for European integration, Olha Trofimtseva. “Thus, at the moment, the EU accounts for 36.5% of our agricultural exports,” she said.
On the whole, the foreign trade in agricultural products in the first two months of 2018 amounted to $3.7 billion, of which $2.8 billion fall for the export of Ukrainian agrarian and food products.
“In the first two months of this year, Ukrainian agrarian exports increased by $102.1 million compared to the corresponding period of 2017 and reached $2.8 billion. Our traditional export leaders are cereals with a 35.3% share, vegetable oil with 24.1% and oilseeds with 12%,” the deputy minister added. During this period, export of Ukrainian poultry meat grew by $29 million, eggs by $11.4 million, butter by $20 million, chocolate by $7.5 million, grape wines by $6.1 million, she said.
According to Trofimtseva, in January-February 2018, the largest importer of Ukrainian agrarian and food products was India, which imported Ukrainian products worth $335.9 million. The top five trade partners included Spain with $201.1 million worth of imported Ukrainian products, the Netherlands with $199.3 million, Egypt with $189.6 million and Italy with $185.6 million.
AGRARIAN, AGRI EXPORT, EU, IMPORT, INDIA
Ukraine and India have signed new contracts worth $20 million to expand bilateral military and technical cooperation as part of the 10th international defense exhibition Def Expo 2018, which is taking place in Chennai (India) on April 11-14, the press service of the Ukroboronprom State Concern reported on Thursday. According to the report, following its participation in the first two days of the exhibition, Spetstechnoexport, part of Ukroboronprom, signed contracts worth about UAH 500 million.
“Representatives of the state-owned enterprise Spetstechnoexport, as part of Def Expo 2018, signed an agreement on cooperation with Indian state-owned company Bharat Electronics Limited. The agreement outlines cooperation between the parties as part of programs for the modernization and localization of the production of components for armored vehicles. Representatives of the Ukrainian and Indian defense industries are to be involved in the creation of a new a tank for the needs of the Indian Defense Ministry, the modernization of radar and air defense systems produced by the former Soviet Union, and joint research and engineering development, including in the sonar and radar directions,” reads the statement.
Bharat Electronics Limited is one of the largest Indian suppliers of defense products for the Indian Defense Ministry. Spetstechnoexport is one of the leading special exporters of Ukraine. It has been part of the Ukroboronprom State Concern since December 2010.
Ukraine and India are working out plans to expand military and technical cooperation in the field of military shipbuilding and are considering the possibility of organizing joint production of power equipment for ships of the Indian Navy, the press service of the Ukroboronprom State Concern has reported. According to the report, the promising directions of the expansion of Ukrainian-Indian military and technical cooperation in the field of military shipbuilding were discussed during negotiations between Ukroboronprom Head Pavlo Bukin and Chief of the Naval Staff of the Indian Navy, Admiral Sunil Lanba, as part of the tenth international defense exhibition Def Expo 2018, which is taking place in the city of Chennai (India) on April 11-14.
“The sides discussed the further participation of the Ukrainian defense industry’s enterprises in the modernization and development of the Indian Navy. In particular, they spoke about continuing supplies and establishing joint production of gas turbine engines, and the servicing by Ukrainian specialists of the Vikramaditya aircraft carrier, which was built by the shipbuilders of the Mykolaiv shipyard,” the report says.
It notes that during the talks Bukin also voiced the interest of the Ukrainian side in the joint production of ship and coastal radar systems, sea buoys, as well as the supply of spare parts for Indian ships and submarines.
“The commander of the Indian Navy expressed support and interest in cooperation with Ukrainian enterprises on a number of existing projects,” the press service said.
Trade between Ukraine and India in 2017 grew by 18.8%, reaching $2.8 billion, Indian Ambassador to Ukraine Mr. Kumar Bharti Manoj said at a press conference at Interfax-Ukraine on Tuesday. “Here two important moments should be pointed out. India became the fifth country in the volume of the export from Ukraine abroad. In addition, India is the second country with which Ukraine has the surplus in trade. Only Ukraine and Egypt have bigger surplus in trade – $1.75 billion, while between Ukraine and India it is $1.65 billion,” he said.
The ambassador said that these indicators fuel confidence that the growth of trade turnover in 2018-2019 could be 20% and 25%, respectively.
Commenting on trade relations between the countries, he said that India was the first country in terms of export of Ukrainian sunflower oil. Last year India exported $2 billion worth of oil. In addition, in 2017, for the first time, a lot of beans were exported from Ukraine to India. “Another very important factor is that the largest share of the total number of foreign students in Ukraine last year was made up of Indian students, a figure we reached for the first time in 15 years,” the Indian diplomat said.
So, according to him, today more than 10,800 Indian students are studying in Ukraine, which is 80% more than in 2015.
“I am pleased to say that in almost two years we have increased the number of Indian students from 6,000 to almost 11,000. Taking into account the fact that each Indian student spends about $5,000 a year for education, living and personal expenses, Ukraine already earns $55 million only through the provision of education to Indian students,” he said. The ambassador said that India plans to increase the number of its citizens studying in Ukrainian universities to 40,000 in the coming years, which in turn will give Ukraine about $200 million a year.
He also said that the inclusion of India in the list of countries, which citizens receive the Ukrainian visa upon their arrival to the airport, had a positive impact on the tourist flow. The number of Indian citizens, who visited Ukraine last year, increased more than 50%, to 29,400 people.
The ambassador said that one of the leading sectors where Ukraine could expect investment from India is pharmaceutical production.
President of the Indian Pharmaceutical Manufacturers’ Association (IPMA) Dr. Ramanan Unni Parambath Menon pointed out the growth of the pharmaceutical market in Ukraine in 2017 and positive changes in the regulatory field in this sphere.
“We see positive steps from regulators, in particular, changes are made to regulations and resolutions, among which there are a lot of democratic norms,” he said.
Head of the Representative Office of Dia Pharma Limited Ukraine Mr. Pandian Thamarai said that at the present, preparations made in India occupy in kind 3% of the Ukrainian pharmaceutical market, in money terms – 4.5%. “There is a great potential for Indian pharmaceutical manufacturers,” he said.
At the same time, representative of EuroLifeCare Sanjeev Bhagat said that for the growth of the volume of Indian medicines on the Ukrainian market, transparent legal regulations, as well as transitional periods in implementing changes, are required to enable manufacturers to properly prepare for the new standards. The IPMA (the Indian Pharmaceutical Manufacturers’ Association) brings together Indian pharmaceutical manufacturing companies that meet high international standards, including US FDA (the United States), UK MHRA (Britain), MCC (South Africa), TGA (Australia), WHO GMP (WHO), GMP (Ukraine), which have representative offices in Ukraine.
