Speaker of the US House of Representatives Mike Johnson said that Washington would provide additional funding for Kyiv, Politico reports.
“I think it will all come together in the coming days. I’m confident and optimistic that we can do it – get it done,” he said.
Johnson said that there is a sense of urgency in getting aid to both Israel and Ukraine, adding that there is “a lot of thoughtful negotiations going on among members of Congress.”
The speaker also said that assistance to Israel is a top priority for the United States and called assistance to Ukraine another priority.
“Of course, we can’t let Vladimir Putin march through Europe, and we understand the need to provide assistance there (Ukraine – IF-U),” Johnson said.
He explained that if Ukraine needs additional assistance, which most members of Congress consider important, then it is also necessary to work on changing US border policy.
The US dollar is weakly strengthening against the euro at auction on Monday, depreciating against the pound sterling.
The yen against the dollar, which jumped at the beginning of the session, again moved to the decline.
The ICE-calculated index showing the dynamics of the dollar against six currencies (the euro, the Swiss franc, the yen, the Canadian dollar, the pound sterling and the Swedish krona) adds less than 0.1%, the broader WSJ Dollar Index – 0.25%.
The euro/dollar pair is trading at $0.9855 as of 9:15 p.m. compared to $0.9864 at the market close on Friday
The pound sterling has risen in price by this time to $1.1375 in comparison with $1.1304 following the results of the previous auctions. The pound strengthens after the refusal of former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson to fight for the post of leader of the Conservative Party and, accordingly, the head of the British government.
This gives ex-Finance Minister Rishi Sunak a good chance of winning, the Financial Times notes.
The dollar/yen pair was trading at 148.93 yen as of 9:15 a.m. versus 147.68 yen at market close on Friday. At the beginning of the session, the dollar fell to 145.53 yen, but then again turned to growth.
On Friday, the US currency fell 0.72% against the yen, which the Nikkei newspaper attributed to the intervention of the Japanese authorities in the foreign exchange market.
Japan’s Finance Minister Shun’ichi Suzuki said on Monday that the Japanese government would take the necessary measures to prevent “excessive exchange rate fluctuations.”
He declined to say whether there were interventions on Friday and Monday.
The dollar against the yen on Friday rose to 151.94 yen – the highest since July 1990.
The dollar against the yuan edged up to 7.2535 yuan from 7.2438 yuan despite stronger than expected Chinese GDP data.
China’s GDP in the third quarter increased by 3.9% in annual terms after rising by 0.4% in April-June. The consensus forecast of experts polled by Trading Economics called for growth of 3.4%.
British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has become an honorary citizen of Odesa, Mayor Hennadiy Trukhanov said in an interview with BBC.
“We very much appreciate the help of your country, your Prime Minister. Therefore, I signed an order to award Boris Johnson with Grigory Marazli Honorary Badges of the 1st, 2nd, 3rd degrees,” Trukhanov was quoted by the press service of Odesa City Council on Telegram.
The presence of all degrees of the award automatically made Johnson an Honorary Citizen of Odesa.
According to Trukhanov, the United Kingdom is the main ally and friend of Ukraine.
“If the entire world community took the same position as the people of Britain, we would have defeated the occupiers long ago,” the mayor of Odesa emphasized.
“I emphasize that this is the struggle of the entire civilized community against fascism version 2.0, and in this struggle, Mr. Johnson will become the first Honorary Citizen of the city – a citizen of Great Britain, since 1862, for the entire existence of the award,” the mayor emphasized.
Prime Minister of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland Boris Johnson, after the meeting of the countries of the British Commonwealth, expressed confidence that the Ukrainian issue will be one of the main issues at the next meeting of the G7 representatives.
“It has been a fantastic few days in Kigali. We are working together with our Commonwealth friends to stimulate trade and investment, advance the green industrial revolution and find solutions to the crisis in Ukraine that will be the focus of the G7 in the coming days,” he wrote in Twitter Saturday night.
As reported, on June 24, Johnson said that the countries of the British Commonwealth together will be able to achieve a reduction in world food prices.
“Global prosperity and stability are under threat – Commonwealth countries bear the brunt of Putin’s recklessness in Ukraine. Together we can bring down food prices and get the world economy back on track while standing up for the freedoms we all believe in,” he wrote.
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky said that he and the Prime Minister of Great Britain have a common view on how to move towards victory over the Russian occupiers.
According to the head of state, his talks with the Prime Minister of Great Britain were as substantive as possible.
“We went over all the key issues of bilateral relations. Issues of the general situation in Europe and in the world. First of all, these are two important things: defense and security. We discussed the current situation on the front line in our east, in the south of our state, our capabilities in protecting against Russian aggression. We have a common view on how to move towards victory. Because this is the result Ukraine needs – the victory of our state,” Zelensky said at a briefing with Johnson in Kyiv on Friday.
He thanked the British Prime Minister for understanding Ukraine’s needs for weapons.
“We talked about the need to increase the supply of heavy weapons to Ukraine. The main thing today is also to ensure the air defense of Ukraine. We began to move in this direction,” the president added.
The UK will provide Ukraine with another £300m ($375m) in military aid to support Ukraine’s ongoing defense against Russia’s illegal incursion.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson will present this new aid package during his speech to the Verkhovna Rada by video link, the office of the head of the British government announced.
The new batch of aid will include electronic warfare equipment, a counter-battery radar system, night vision devices and satellite navigation jamming equipment. London will also supply heavy drones to support isolated forces and more than a dozen new specialized Toyota Land Cruisers to protect civilians in eastern Ukraine and evacuate civilians from frontline areas.
The prime minister is expected to say that this is Ukraine’s “finest hour” and the UK is “proud to be among its friends.”
“This is Ukraine’s finest hour, an epic chapter in your national history that future generations will remember and tell. Your children and grandchildren will say that Ukrainians have taught the world that the brute force of an aggressor means nothing against the moral strength of a people who have decided to be free,” quotes the premier’s office as saying his planned speech.
Johnson is expected to note that when the UK faced the threat of invasion during the Second World War, its Parliament, like the Verkhovna Rada, continued to meet throughout the conflict, and the British people showed such unity and determination that the country is remembering the time of the greatest danger as her finest hour.
It is indicated that this will be the first speech of a world leader in the Supreme Rage since the beginning of the war.
Britain has previously delivered more than 5,000 anti-tank missiles and five air defense systems to Ukraine worth £200m.
