Fourteen EU countries, as well as Norway, Switzerland and Liechtenstein, have signed an appeal calling on the EU executive to propose new rules to strengthen return policies, Politico reports.
In their letter to the European Commission, 17 European countries ask for new rules that will allow governments to detain illegal migrants if they pose a threat to national security, force migrants to cooperate with authorities, and ensure that all EU countries use the same data management software.
The letter to the Commission states that migrants who do not have the right to stay in the EU “must be brought to justice.”
It is noted that Norway, Switzerland, and Liechtenstein have also signed the appeal, although they are not members of the EU, they are members of the Schengen area.
The publication notes that the push comes amid a right-wing and anti-immigration shift in many EU countries.
The Ukrainian delegation during the WTO ministerial conference held about two dozen bilateral talks on possible trade liberalization and removal of existing barriers, in particular, in trade in agricultural products, Deputy Economy Minister – Trade Representative of Ukraine Taras Kachka said.
“The main conclusion is that the world believes in Ukraine and is ready to open markets for Ukrainian products. This means that the world believes in our victory over the aggressor,” he wrote on Facebook after the conference.
Kachka also said that Ukraine has sent a request to the European Free Trade Association (Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein) to update the free trade agreement, and it will be considered next week within the framework of the EFTA institute.
According to the trade representative, he discussed further steps to liberalize trade, having carried out preparatory work right at the conference, with Canadian Minister of International Trade Mary Ng.
Kachka added that he agreed with the Minister of Trade of Australia in a few days after the conference to discuss in detail the possibilities of liberalizing bilateral trade (GSP and FTA).
The Ukrainian trade representative also said that he had discussed the conclusion of an agreement on digital trade with UK Secretary for International Trade Anne-Marie Trevelyan.
“The same issue – trade liberalization and digital trade – were relevant in a conversation with the Minister of Trade of Singapore. Singapore is ready to become a hub for trade in Ukrainian products in Asia,” Kachka added.
According to him, at a meeting with the Minister of Trade of Senegal, he emphasized that Ukraine is doing everything to increase exports and feed Africa.
“Senegal is chairing the African Union this year and their understanding of the true causes of food problems is very important,” the Ukrainian trade representative said.

Hereditary Prince of Liechtenstein Alois advocates the increase in investment of his country in the Ukrainian economy. “We talked about expanding economic cooperation. There are Liechtenstein firms that are already working in Ukraine… We talked about the possibility of developing this cooperation and attracting more Liechtenstein investments to Ukraine,” the prince said in a statement to the press after a meeting with Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko in Kyiv. He said that in recent years Liechtenstein participated in various projects in Ukraine – both in supporting the reform process and in the humanitarian sphere.
In turn, Poroshenko said that half of the investments that come from Liechtenstein to Ukraine are directed to industry. “This shows the long-term and strategic nature of Liechtenstein investors’ plans for Ukraine,” the head of state said.
Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko will meet with Hereditary Prince of Liechtenstein Alois on Wednesday. The prince is on an official visit to Ukraine at the invitation of the head of state. “During the talks, they plan to discuss the intensification of Ukrainian-Liechtenstein political dialogue, Liechtenstein’s support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine, as well as the intensification of trade and economic cooperation, taking into account free trade opportunities as part of the European Free Trade Association,” the presidential press service said.
The prince will also visit Lviv. “This visit will be the first visit by a high representative of Liechtenstein since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two states,” the report said.
