The demand for poultry since the introduction of quarantine measures in Ukraine in connection with the COVID-19 pandemic has grown by an average of 20% in the country, the press service of Myronivsky Hliboproduct agricultural holding has said.
“Since the introduction of quarantine in Ukraine, the demand for products has grown by an average of 20% in the domestic market. This mainly concerns packaged products,” the company said.
MHP said it had not raised prices for their products.
“MHP will continue to provide Ukrainians with the necessary volumes of chicken to avoid panic and shortages in the domestic market,” the company said.
The agricultural holding said the capacities of MHP enterprises operate at 100%. MHP also exports products to more than 80 countries.
MHP is the largest producer of poultry in Ukraine. It is also engaged in production of cereals, sunflower oil, meat. MHP supplies chilled chicken half-carcasses to the European market, which are also processed at its enterprises in the Netherlands and Slovakia.
Ukraine in January-February 2020 increased export of poultry by 4.2%, to 66,270 tonnes, the State Customs Service has reported. According to its report, in monetary terms exports of these products decreased 7.1%, to $81.9 million.
In January-February 2020, import of poultry and offal decreased by 41.2% and amounted to 12,760 tonnes, in monetary terms by 35.1%, to $5.56 million.
In addition, according to the agency, pork exports in January-February 2020 amounted to 364 tonnes, which is 3.2 times more than in January-February 2019. These products were delivered for a total of $1.07 million (4.6 times more).
Pork imports to Ukraine January 2020 decreased by 54.6%, to 1,970 tonnes. Pork was imported to the country for $3.93 million, which is 50% less than the figure for January-February 2019.

Pork exports in 2019 amounted to 2,260 tonnes, which is 28.6% more than in 2018. Pork imports to Ukraine last year decreased by 18.8%, to 23,190 tonnes.
Ukraine in January 2020 increased export of poultry by 27.8%, to 37,350 tonnes, the State Customs Service has reported. According to its report, in monetary terms exports of these products increased by 18%, to $45.87 million. In January 2020, import of poultry and offal decreased by 20% and amounted to 9,350 tonnes, in monetary terms by 15.9%, to $3.89 million.
In addition, according to the agency, pork exports in January 2020 amounted to 101 tonnes, which is 20.2% more than in January 2019. These products were delivered for a total of $297,000 (1.7 times more).

Myronivsky Hliboproduct (MHP), certified in the EU, has stopped exports of poultry to these countries as of January 23, the group has said.
“All MHP production facilities continue to operate as normal and have begun to take all necessary steps according to the export sales diversification strategy approved by the group’s management. MHP continues to adhere to existing quality and biosafety standards and sells its products both on the local market and in the countries, where there is no export ban,” MHP said.
The group said that now the production team of specialists and veterinarians at the MHP facilities is following a clear plan to counteract bird flu and is taking all necessary measures to prevent potential outbreaks at all MHP production sites.
According to the group, at present the state veterinary authorities of Ukraine are in close cooperation with the EU authorities in order to coordinate and take all necessary steps to resolve the issue of opening the market and come to a final agreement on the implementation of detailed regionalization, which has not yet been officially ratified.
MHP said that in 2019 about 30% of the group’s total exports were sent to the EU. In January-September 2019, MHP increased poultry exports by 26%, to 269,670 tonnes. In 2018, exports grew by 30%, to 286,800 tonnes.
The timely reaction to the avian influenza outbreak in Ukraine allowed the country not to halt imports of poultry from the European Union (EU) and Ukrainian counts on uninterrupted authorization to export Ukrainian poultry to the EU, Deputy Economic Development, Trade and Agriculture Minister, Ukraine’s Trade Representative Taras Kachka has said. “Over the past month, a number of EU Member States have recorded cases of avian influenza. But a timely decision on zoning and a well-functioning communication mechanism allowed Ukraine to not stop the import of poultry meat from the EU for this reason. Therefore, we immediately informed the competent authorities of the EU about the detected case of bird flu in Vinnytsia region,” he wrote on his Facebook page on Thursday.
In addition, Ukraine has suspended certification of exporter capacity in a 30 km zone, while the EU sets requirements for the 10 km zone.
“All these measures are being taken to prove to the whole world that trust allows us to maintain trade in such sensitive situations,” Kachka said.
The deputy minister expects that in such conditions the EU will retain a permit for the import of poultry meat from Ukraine.
“If we were hostile to each other, the EU would have taken this opportunity and tried to close imports from Ukraine in general. This would trigger a chain mechanism of mutual restrictions. (Both sides want to avoid this scenario). In the meantime, we are actively cooperating with EU regulatory authorities so that the reaction is friendly and adequate,” Kachka said.
