Business news from Ukraine

Number of pigs in Ukraine increased by 3%, poultry – by 2.2%

The number of pigs in Ukraine in 2024 in all categories of farms increased by 3%, and poultry – by 2.2%, said Olena Dadus, head of the Livestock and Breeding Department of the Agrarian Development Department of the Ministry of Agrarian Policy, at the MeatForum industry conference.

“Domestic livestock producers almost completely supply the domestic food market and its processing component. Last year, meat consumption in Ukraine per capita amounted to 54.7 kg, while the minimum requirement is 52 kg. The consumption forecast for 2024 is 53.9 kg, due to a decrease in beef consumption. However, there will be an increase in public demand for pork and poultry as the most affordable types of meat,” she said in a statement by the press service of the Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food.

It is noted that in 2023, poultry production in Ukraine increased by 5.8% compared to last year, and that this segment is the one that meets export demand for Ukrainian products. Pork and beef production declined slightly, and its pace slowed significantly.

According to the agency, due to the increase in domestic meat production, the total volume of meat imports decreased. Ukraine imported meat products from Poland, Spain, France, the Netherlands, Denmark, Hungary, and Canada.

At the same time, there was an increase in meat exports. The Netherlands, Saudi Arabia, Slovakia, China, Azerbaijan, the United Kingdom, and Georgia were the most frequent buyers of Ukrainian products.

KSG AGRO INCREASES NUMBER OF PIGS TO 54.5 THOUSAND TONS

The number of pigs of the agricultural holding KSG Agro as of April 1 of this year increased by 1% (0.51 thousand heads) compared to a month earlier, from 54.02 thousand heads to 54.53 thousand heads, then as the sale of live pigs by him increased by 3%, from 6.08 thousand to 6.25 thousand heads, according to a press release from the group on Wednesday.
“Despite the extremely difficult situation in the country as a result of martial law, characterized by a break in supply chains, we, by creating a stock of feed and updating the number of sows last year, managed to increase the number of pigs and the volume of their sale,” the head of the board of directors said in a statement. KSG Agro Sergey Kasyanov.
According to him, the agricultural holding intends to continue stable work and will gradually increase production indicators, thereby ensuring the food security of Ukraine and helping the Ukrainian armed forces with its products.
As reported, KSG Agro in April began to form a three-month strategic stock of raw materials for fattening pigs at its own feed mill to ensure the uninterrupted operation of its pig farm in the context of the Russian military invasion of Ukraine.
The vertically integrated holding KSG Agro is engaged in pig breeding, as well as the production, storage, processing and sale of grains and oilseeds. Its land bank is about 21 thousand hectares in the Dnepropetrovsk and Kherson regions.
According to the agricultural holding itself, it is among the top 5 pork producers in Ukraine.

NUMBER OF PIGS IN UKRAINIAN INDUSTRIAL SECTOR INCREASES TO 3.68 MLN

The number pig farms in Ukraine as of January 1, 2021 decreased by 7.4% compared to January 1, 2020, to 1,440, while the number of pigs in the industrial sector increased by 9.6%, to 3.68 million, the Association of Ukrainian Pig Breeders said, citing the data of the State Statistics Service.
According to the association, the intensity of the reduction of pig farms in 2020 decreased less than the average in 2015-2019, since during that period 9-13% of operators left the industry annually.
The association noted the increase in livestock capacity by farms with a livestock of more than 10,000 pigs. In this segment, the livestock for the year increased by more than 300,000, to 2.34 million animals. At the same time, by January 1, 2021, more than 65% of the industrial pig population was “concentrated” at 77 production sites.
Operators with a livestock of 5,000-10,000 animals also showed positive dynamics, the number of animals they had in 2020 increased by 12.8%.
“The share of pig farms with a livestock of less than 5,000 animals has been declining most of all over the past years. Therefore, so far, 144 largest enterprises provide the increase in the capacity of the industrial sector. This means that domestic pig breeding, like the global one, continues to develop through enlargement,” the association analysts said.
The Association of Ukrainian Pig Breeders is a non-profit voluntary organization established in 2011. The association unites 38 farms, the breeding stock of which is 39% of the national volume. The main goal of the association is to protect the rights and interests of enterprises in the pig industry and achieve world production standards.
