Volume of remittances to Ukraine for January-May decreased by 15.4% to – $3.5 billion

The volume of remittances to Ukraine for January-May 2025 decreased by 15.4% to – $3.5 billion, in particular net remuneration of labor decreased by 18.7%, and the volume of private transfers – by 11.2%, according to the data of the balance of payments of the National Bank of Ukraine (NBU). As noted in the statistics, in May, the volume of private money transfers decreased by 13.2%, to $0.7 billion.

“Wages that Ukrainians receive from abroad decreased by 9.5%, and other private transfers received through official channels decreased by 9.7%,” – commented the National Bank.

Overall, the volume of transfers through official channels in May 2025 was 9.6% lower than in May 2024, while receipts through informal channels decreased by 18% year-on-year.

In May 2025, the primary revenue balance turned negative to $45 million against a surplus of $20 million in May 2024.

“The decline in labor compensation receipts (down 16.9%) was more rapid than the decline in investment income payments6 (down 2.7%).” The secondary income balance surplus shrank,” the regulator explains.

At the same time, the secondary income balance surplus decreased to $0.7bn from $1.0bn in May last year due to a reduction in technical and humanitarian aid.

UKRAINIANS RECEIVE $100 MLN IN FISCAL AID REMITTANCES FROM INTL ORGANIZATIONS THROUGH PRIVATBANK

Ukrainians have received 800,000 aid remittances totaling $100 million from international organizations, the bank’s press service reported on Monday.

According to the report, most of the payments came from the UN World Food Program, the UN Refugee Agency in Ukraine and the International Committee of the Red Cross.

According to the statistics of the National Bank of Ukraine, as of April 1, 2022, PrivatBank ranked first (UAH 592.38 billion) among 69 banks operating in the country in terms of total assets.

REMITTANCES TO UKRAINE TOTAL $1.2 BLN IN H1 – NATIONAL BANK

The volume of remittances to Ukraine via the money transfer systems in H1 2018 totaled $1.2 billion in the equivalent and from Ukraine – $140 million, the National Bank of Ukraine (NBU) reported on its website. According to the report, over the period remittances inside Ukraine accounted for UAH 69.4 billion.
As reported, the volume of money transfers to Ukraine through money transfer systems in 2017 decreased by 4.4% and amounted to $2.378 billion, from Ukraine – by 18.8%, to $286 million, while within Ukraine it increased by 21.4%, to $4.456 billion.
As of the beginning of July 2018, out of 37 money transfer systems that operated in Ukraine, 31 systems transferred funds within Ukraine and 12 systems provided cross-border transfer services.
The bulk of remittances within Ukraine is provided by systems created by resident non-bank institutions. At the same time, 11 these systems together carried out about 92% of all transfers.
