South Korean giant Samsung has become the world’s largest smartphone vendor in the first quarter of 2024, according to research firm International Data Corporation (IDC).
By the end of 2023, the leader for the first time was U.S.-based Apple Inc. Smartphone shipments in the world in the first quarter of 2024 increased by 7.8% year-on-year to 289.4 million units, IDC said in a preliminary report. The growth marked the third consecutive quarter of growth, indicating the market’s recovery from a two-year slump.
Samsung’s sales were down 0.7% year-on-year, while Apple’s sales fell 9.6%. Meanwhile, China’s Xiaomi increased shipments by a third, while the Transsion brand recorded a growth of nearly 85% and climbed to fourth on the list of the world’s largest smartphone vendors.
“As expected, the smartphone market recovery continues amid a gradual increase in optimism for leading brands,” said Ryan Rieth, vice president of Worldwide Mobility and Consumer Device Trackers. – Apple fell out of the lead late last year, but Samsung successfully regained the top spot in the first quarter.”
IDC analysts expect Samsung and Apple to continue to dominate the top price segment, but also point to the potential for further growth and diversification by brandos such as Huawei, Xiaomi, Transsion, OPPO/OnePlus and vivo.
From October 2020 to January 2021, the use of 5G smartphones in Ukraine increased from 31,000 to 194,000.
The data was received by the Ministry of Digital Transformation of Ukraine together with mobile network operators, according to the ministry’s website.
The ministry said that the number of smartphones with 4G support also continues to grow, since several thousand settlements are connected monthly to this technology by mobile network operators. Therefore, owners of almost 31 million smartphones can use 4G high-speed Internet.
“We see a situation when Ukrainians, having 4G smartphones and the necessary coverage, continue using the old SIM cards with 3G. We urge subscribers to replace their cards with those that support 4G, because this data transfer technology is 10-15 times faster than the Internet of the older generation. Replacement is free with each operator and takes several minutes. After that, the quality of the video call and the speed of downloading files will be much higher,” the press service said, citing Head of the mobile Internet development group of the Ministry of Digital Transformation Stanislav Prybytko.
Viber application was installed on 96% of smartphones of Ukrainian residents in 2019, the press service of the application has reported, referring to an independent study by Kantar. According to the report, 33% of Viber users in Ukraine are young people aged 25 to 34 years, almost 16% are from 18 to 24 years old. The most popular Viber is in Kyiv, Lviv and Kharkiv.
According to Viber, more than half of all users in the country are women (55%), and the share of men is 45%.
By the number of messages sent, the most active were the residents of Kyiv – 14%. The second place is occupied by Lviv (5%), followed by Kharkiv (4%) and Dnipro (2%).
Kyivans get used to make free calls via Viber (14% of all outgoing calls in Ukraine), as well as residents of Lviv (4.5%), Kharkiv (4%), Dnipro (2%) and Zaporizhia (2%).
Viber is a call and messaging application created in December 2010.
Viber is currently part of the Rakuten Inc. group headquartered in Tokyo, Japan.
Some 85% of Ukrainians were users of smartphones as of late H1 2018, which was 3% more than a year ago, the OLX announcement service has said in a press release, referring to a study by GfK. “Last year in Ukraine there were only 82% of smartphone users, now their number has reached 85%, while, according to statistics, each consumer on average owns three or four gadgets,” GfK said in the study.
According to the research company, in the first half of 2018, 50% of Ukrainians sought information about the desired product from a mobile phone. Meanwhile, according to forecasts of the research company eMarketer, by 2021 the share of mobile purchases in the global e-commerce market will amount to 72.9% of all sales.
According to data provided by the OLX press service, in 2018, 50% of the Ukrainian Internet audience visits the Ukrainian OLX trading platform least once a month, with 60% of them using mobile devices for this purpose.
At the same time, according to reports of the three largest mobile operators in Ukraine, the penetration of smartphones in their networks is the following: Kyivstar as of July 1, 2018 – almost 50%, Vodafone-Ukraine in the first half of 2018- about 60%; and lifecell – as of the end of the second quarter of 71%.
