Scrap collectors increased scrap supplies to steelmakers by 71%, while exports grew by 63%

In January-February of this year, ferrous scrap companies increased scrap supplies to Ukrainian steelmakers by 71.4% year-on-year, up to 206 thousand tons from 120.2 thousand tons.

As reported in the operational information of the Ukrainian Association of Secondary Metals (UAVtormet) on Thursday, scrap metal procurement in the first two months of this year increased by 70% compared to the same period last year – up to 258.7 thousand tons from 152.2 thousand tons.

At the same time, exports of scrap metal for the period amounted to 40.4 thousand tons compared to 24.8 thousand tons in January-February 2023 (an increase of 62.9%). At the same time, imports of scrap amounted to 0.02 thousand tons, while in January-February 2023 – 0.05 thousand tons.

As of March 1, 2023, the level of scrap stocks at Ukrainian steelmakers was estimated at 20-30 thousand tons.

As reported earlier, ferrous scrap companies may increase their scrap procurement by 17-33% year-on-year in 2024, to 1.5-1.7 million tons.

According to UVTORMET’s forecast, Ukraine will produce 6.8-7 million tons of steel in 2024 (6.228 million tons in 2023 and 6.263 million tons in 2022), procure 1.5-1.7 million tons of scrap metal (1,277.3 thousand tons in 2023 and 996.7 thousand tons in 2022), and steel companies will consume 1,277.3 thousand tons (1,277.3 thousand tons in 2023 and 996.7 thousand tons in 2022). tons in 2023 and 996.7 thousand tons in 2022). tons), steelmakers will consume 1.2-1.4 million tons of scrap (1 million 34.7 thousand tons in 2023 and 895.7 thousand tons in 2022), export 250-300 thousand tons of scrap (182.5 thousand tons and 53.6 thousand tons, respectively), increasing the export of strategic raw materials for steelmakers by 37-64% compared to last year.

In January-February, Ukrainian steelmakers increased revenues from ferrous metal exports by 46% to $522 mln

In January-February of this year, Ukrainian steelmakers increased revenues from exports of ferrous metals by 46.3% year-on-year to $522.519 million.

According to statistics released by the State Customs Service (SCS) on Wednesday, ferrous metals accounted for 7.67% of total export revenues during this period, compared to 5.53% in January-February 2023.

In February, revenues from exports of ferrous metals amounted to $248.443 million.

At the same time, Ukraine increased imports of similar products by 35.6% to $221.529 million in January-February this year. In February, the country imported products worth $112.114 million.

Scrap collectors reduced scrap supplies to steelmakers by 7%

In January-September of this year, ferrous scrap enterprises reduced the supply of scrap to Ukrainian metallurgical enterprises by 7% compared to the same period last year – to 703 thousand tons from 755.5 thousand tons, and by 72.2% compared to the first nine months of 2021 (2.530 million tons).

As reported in the operational information of the Ukrainian Association of Secondary Metals (UAVtormet) on Friday, the procurement of scrap metal for the first nine months of 2023 increased by 5.8% compared to the same period last year – up to 878 thousand tons.

At the same time, exports of scrap metal for the period amounted to 131.1 thousand tons compared to 35.2 thousand tons in January-September 2022 (an increase of 3.7 times). At the same time, imports of scrap amounted to 0.8 thousand tons, while in the first nine months of 2022 it amounted to 1.6 thousand tons.

As of October 1, 2023, the level of scrap stocks at Ukrainian steelmakers was estimated at 25-30 thousand tons.

As reported, in 2022, Ukraine reduced scrap procurement by 75.9% compared to 2021, to 996.7 thousand tons from 4.136 million tons. Last year, scrap exports amounted to 53.6 thousand tons, which is 11.5 times less than in the previous year (615.7 thousand tons). At the same time, scrap imports amounted to 1.8 thousand tons (in 2021 – 23 thousand tons).

In 2022, scrap supplies to the country’s steelmaking companies decreased by 73% compared to 2021, to 895.7 thousand tons from 3 million 323.4 thousand tons.

“UAVtormet forecasts ferrous scrap procurement of 1.25-1.3 million tons in 2023. In addition, it is expected that scrap supplies to the country’s steelmakers will amount to 1-1.05 million tons. Exports of scrap metal are expected to reach 180-200 thousand tons, while imports are expected to reach 0.8-1.2 thousand tons. Steel production is expected to reach 5.6-5.8 million tons.

Ukrainian steelmakers reduced production of total rolled products in January-June

Ukrainian metallurgical enterprises in January-June this year reduced the production of total rolled steel, according to operational data, by 41% compared to the same period last year – to 2.375 million tons.
According to the association “Ukrmetallurgprom” on Saturday, in the first six months of this year, steel production fell by 37.7% compared with January-June 2022 – to 2.829 million tons.
Cast iron production during this period decreased by 37.5% to 2.836 million tons.
As reported, Ukraine in 5M-2023 decreased the production of rolled steel by 47.8% over the same period last year – to 1.982 million tons, steel by 43.7% to 2.392 million tons, and cast iron by 43.9% to 2.350 million tons.

Ukrainian steelmakers reduced production of total rolled products by 56%

Ukrainian metallurgical enterprises in January-April this year reduced the production of total rolled steel, according to operational data, by 56% compared with the same period last year – to 1.512 million tons.
According to the association “Ukrmetallurgprom” on Tuesday, in the first four months of this year, steel production fell by 54% compared with January-April 2022 – to 1.809 million tons.
Iron smelting for this period decreased by 54% to 1.747 million tons.
As reported, in 2022, Ukraine reduced the production of general products by 72% compared to the previous year – up to 5.350 million tons, steel – by 70.7% – to 6.263 million tons, cast iron – by 69.8% – to 6.391 million tons.
In 2021, the company produced 21.165 million tons of cast iron (103.6% by 2020), 21.366 million tons of steel (103.6%), 19.079 million tons of rolled steel (103.5%).

Ukrainian steelmakers reduce steel production 6.5 times

Metallurgical enterprises in Ukraine in January this year reduced steel production 6.5 times compared to the same period in 2022 – to 284 thousand tons from 1.851 in January-2022, but increased smelting compared to December-2022, when 106 thousand tons were smelted.
As a result, Ukraine took 34th place in the ranking of 64 major global producers of these products, compiled by the Worldsteel Association (Worldsteel), while in December it was 38th.
According to Worldsteel, in January-2023 there was a decline in steelmaking against January-2022 in most of the top ten countries, except China and Iran.
The top ten steel-producing countries in January are as follows: China (79.450 million tons, up 2.3% over January-2022), India (10.930 million tons, down 0.2%), Japan (7.222 million tons, down 6.9%), USA (6.497 million tons, down 6.8%), Russia (5.750 million tons, down 8.9%), South Korea (5.477 million tons, minus 9.8%), Germany (2.925 million tons, minus 10.2%), Brazil (2.783 million tons, minus 4.9%), Iran (2.7 million tons, up 27.7%) and Turkey (2.605 million tons, down 17.6%).
Overall, global steelmaking fell 3.3% to 145.252 million tons in January 2023 from the same period in 2022, compared to a 10.8% decline in December 2022, with an absolute figure of 140.695 million tons.
The country produced 313 thousand tons of steel in November 2022, 318 thousand tons in October, 340 thousand tons in September, 366 thousand tons in August, 281 thousand tons in July, 295 thousand tons in June, 308 thousand tons in May, 281 thousand tons in April, 200 thousand tons in March, 1.374 million tons in February and 1.851 million tons in January.
As reported, metallurgical enterprises in Ukraine reduced steel production in December last year by 16.4 times, or 93.9%, compared to the same period in 2021 – up to 106 thousand tons.
For the 12 months of 2022, the top ten steel producing countries were as follows: China (1.013 billion tons, down 2.1%), India (124.720 million tons, up 5.5%), Japan (89.235 million tons, down 7.4%), USA (80.715 million tons, “minus” 5.9%), Russia (71.5 million tons, down 7.2%), South Korea (65.865 mt, minus 6.5%), Germany (36.849 mt, minus 8.4%), Turkey (35.134 mt, down 12.9%), Brazil (33.972 mt, down 5.8%) and Iran (30.593 mt, up 8%).
Ukraine in 12 months of 2022 was in 23rd place with the melting of 6.263 million tons of steel (“minus” 70.7%).
In total, 64 countries produced 1 billion 831.467 million tons of steel in 2022, which is 4.3% less than in 2021.
