The Hungarian low cost airline Wizz Air in January-July 2019 transported 1.3 million passengers from/to Ukraine, which is almost twice as much compared to the same period in 2018, Wizz Air’s press service has said.
“Wizz Air continues to provide Ukrainian passengers with the opportunity of affordable travel, offering flights on 46 routes to 13 European countries at prices starting from UAH 289. The constant expansion of Wizz Air’s activities facilitated the transportation of about 1.3 million passengers on its flights to and from Ukraine over the seven months of 2019. This is almost twice as much compared to the same period last year and makes Wizz Air the largest low cost carrier in Ukraine,” it says.
Wizz Air, the largest low cost airline in Central and Eastern Europe, offers flights on more than 650 routes in 44 countries.
Wizz Air resumed operations at Lviv Airport in 2017, launching flights to Wroclaw and Berlin.
Hungary’s low cost airline Wizz Air Holdings Plc in its report for FY2019 posted on the London Stock Exchange (LSE), referring to Innovata source, named Russia’s Aeroflot and Nordwind Airlines among the largest on the Ukrainian market.
According to the report of Wizz Air, referring to Innovata portal, Aeroflot is second with the market share of 8.2% in Ukraine after Ukraine International Airlines (UIA) with 35.9% market share according to the report. The share of the Ukrainian market of Wizz Air is 7.7%.
As for the low cost segment, Wizz Air named itself number one with the market share of 43.1%, placing Nordwind Airlines with 12.9% second and Pegasus Airlines with 12.5% third.
According to the report of Wizz Air Holdings Plc, Wizz Air Ukraine is inactive, and the number of flights from Ukraine as of March 31, 2019 was 30.
According to the information from the route network of airlines, both Aeroflot and Nordwind Airlines fly to the annexed Crimea, in particular, Nordwind Airlines is among airlines serviced the largest number flights to Crimea from Russia.
Wizz Air, one of the largest European low-cost airlines, has postponed the launch of flights from Kyiv to Leipzig (Germany) from July 5 to August 9.
According to data in the booking system, the first departure from Kyiv (Zhuliany) is scheduled for August 9 at 13:00, back from Leipzig at 14:45 local time.
Flights will be operated twice a week on Mondays and Fridays. The planned flight duration is just over two hours.
The cost of a one-way ticket starts from UAH 1,300.
Wizz Air, one of the largest European low-cost airlines, will start flights from Kyiv to Leipzig from July 5, 2019, which will become the tenth city in Germany to which the air carrier will fly from Kyiv.
According to a press release of Wizz Air, flights in this direction will be performed twice a week on Mondays and Fridays.
With the launch of this flight, the total number of destinations to which Wizz Air flies from Ukraine will reach 45 in 13 countries, in particular 29 from Kyiv.
The report says since the beginning of this year the airline has transported about 450,000 passengers on its flights to/from Ukraine, which is more than 80% more than in the same period last year and, according to its data, makes Wizz Air the largest low-cost carrier in Ukraine.
In total, Wizz Air offers flights on more than 650 routes from 25 bases, connecting 146 destinations in 44 countries. The airline’s fleet consists of 109 Airbus aircraft. Last year the airline carried 34 million passengers.
The Hungarian low-cost air carrier Wizz Air will launch flights from Krakow (Poland) to Kharkiv a month and a half earlier, from August 2, 2019 (previously planned from September 16), according to the airline’s booking system.
Kharkiv-Krakow flights will be carried out on Mondays and Fridays (departure to Krakow at 17:35, back at 14:05 local time).
As reported, Wizz Air is considering the possibility of resuming the work of the Ukrainian subsidiary Wizz Air Ukraine in 2019, and also plans to invest $2.5 billion by 2025 to increase the Ukrainian fleet to 20 new Airbus A320 and Airbus A321 aircraft.

The Hungarian low-cost airline Wizz Air in January-February 2019 carried more than 300,000 passengers on its flights to/from Ukraine, which is 94% more compared to the same period in 2018, the company has said in connection with placing the fourth aircraft at the base in Kyiv and the launch of four new flights from Ukraine.
“As a result of the growing demand among Ukrainian passengers … the airline offers 44 routes to 13 countries from three Ukrainian airports: Kyiv, Lviv, and Kharkiv,” the company said.
According to the booking system, the matter concerns 28 flights from Kyiv, ten from Lviv, six from Kharkiv. In particular, on March 1-3 Wizz Air began operating flights from Kyiv to Bremen, Billund (Denmark), and Riga, and from Lviv to Copenhagen.
According to the company, the deployment of the fourth Airbus A320 aircraft in Ukraine increases the total investment in the country to more than $400 million, as well as the number of jobs created to 140.
