The timely reaction to the avian influenza outbreak in Ukraine allowed the country not to halt imports of poultry from the European Union (EU) and Ukrainian counts on uninterrupted authorization to export Ukrainian poultry to the EU, Deputy Economic Development, Trade and Agriculture Minister, Ukraine’s Trade Representative Taras Kachka has said. “Over the past month, a number of EU Member States have recorded cases of avian influenza. But a timely decision on zoning and a well-functioning communication mechanism allowed Ukraine to not stop the import of poultry meat from the EU for this reason. Therefore, we immediately informed the competent authorities of the EU about the detected case of bird flu in Vinnytsia region,” he wrote on his Facebook page on Thursday.
In addition, Ukraine has suspended certification of exporter capacity in a 30 km zone, while the EU sets requirements for the 10 km zone.
“All these measures are being taken to prove to the whole world that trust allows us to maintain trade in such sensitive situations,” Kachka said.
The deputy minister expects that in such conditions the EU will retain a permit for the import of poultry meat from Ukraine.
“If we were hostile to each other, the EU would have taken this opportunity and tried to close imports from Ukraine in general. This would trigger a chain mechanism of mutual restrictions. (Both sides want to avoid this scenario). In the meantime, we are actively cooperating with EU regulatory authorities so that the reaction is friendly and adequate,” Kachka said.
Ukraine in January-December 2019 increased export of poultry by 26%, to 414,490 tonnes, the State Customs Service has reported. According to its report, in monetary terms exports of these products increased by 14.2%, to $578.63 million. In 2019, import of poultry and offal increased by 0.6% and amounted to 131,180 tonnes, in monetary terms by 1.2%, to $52.53 million.
In addition, according to the agency, pork exports in January-December 2019 amounted to 2,260 tonnes, which is 28.6% more than in 2018. These products were delivered for a total of $5.27 million (39.6% more).
Pork imports to Ukraine last year decreased by 18.8%, to 23,190 tonnes. Pork was imported to the country for $44.23 million, which is 14.8% less than the figure for 2018.
Ukraine is one of the five world exporters of poultry, Minister of Economic Development, Trade and Agriculture Tymofiy Mylovanov has stated.
“Ukraine has entered the top five of the world’s poultry exporters. Brazil, the EU and Thailand are ahead of Ukraine,” he wrote on his Facebook page.
In addition, the minister said that the EU issued import permits for 58,000 tonnes of Ukrainian wheat as part of the first distribution of the tariff quota (TRQ) for 2020.
“Almost the entire quota was issued for duty-free supplies of Ukrainian wheat,” he said.
As reported, with reference to the ministry, Ukraine as of January 10, 2019 and since the beginning of the 2019/2020 marketing year (MY, July-June) has exported 32.08 million tonnes of grain, which is 7.8 million tonnes more than for the same period of the last marketing year.
In particular, the following amount was delivered to foreign markets: wheat in the amount of 15.1 million tonnes, corn some 12.8 million tonnes, and barley some 3.8 million tonnes.
Ukraine in the 2018/2019 MY exported a record 50.4 million tonnes of grain, legumes and flour, which is 23% more than in the previous MY. It is expected that 54 million tonnes will be exported in the current MY.
Ukraine in January-November 2019 increased export of poultry by 23.4%, to 375,110 tonnes, the State Fiscal Service has reported. According to the service, in monetary terms exports of these products rose by 12.7%, to $531.74 million.
At the same time, import of poultry in January-November 2019 slightly decreased, to 121,100 tonnes, in money terms to $48.2 million.
In addition, according to the service, pork exports in January-November 2019 amounted to 2,050 tonnes compared to 1,650 tonnes for the same period in 2018. These products were delivered for $4.69 million against $3.55 million for the eleven months of 2018.
Pork imports to Ukraine during this period decreased by 16.8%, to 21,920 tonnes. Pork worth $41.85 million was imported to the country compared to $48.12 million in January-November 2018.
Ukraine in January-October 2019 increased export of poultry by 23%, to 333,810 tonnes, the State Fiscal Service has reported.
According to the service, in monetary terms exports of these products rose by 12.8%, to $479.73 million.
At the same time, import of poultry for the ten months of 2019 decreased by 2.1%, to 108,660 tonnes, in money terms by 2%, to $43.29 million.
In addition, according to the service, pork exports in January-October 2019 amounted to 1,790 tonnes compared to 1,540 tonnes for the same period in 2018. These products were delivered for $3.95 million against $3.34 million for the ten months of 2018.
Pork imports to Ukraine during this period decreased by 12.5%, to 20,460 tonnes. Pork worth $39 million was imported to the country compared to $43.17 million in January-October 2018.
Cattle livestock in Ukraine (excluding the temporarily occupied territory of Crimea, Sevastopol, parts of Donetsk and Luhansk regions) as of September 1, 2019 amounted to 3.67 million animals, which is 4.6% down on the same date in 2018, the State Statistics Service has reported. The number of cows by this date also decreased 4.6%, to 1.91 million head.
According to the State Statistics Service, the number of pigs as of September 1, 2019, fell by 2.6%, to 6.29 million animals, the number of sheep and goats declined by 3.1%, to 1.52 million animals compared to the same period of 2018.
The number of poultry in the country compared with September 1, 2018, increased 3.8%, to 254.79 million birds.
