Amazon remained global retailer leader for eighth year in row

Brand Amazon remained the leader among global retailers for the eighth consecutive year, despite a 14.6% drop in its value over the past year to $299.3 billion, according to Brand Finance.
By a wide margin in the second and third positions are two other U.S. brands Walmart (up 1.7% to $113.78 billion) and Home Depot (+8.4% to $61.05 billion).
Costco and Lowe’s climbed to fourth and fifth place, respectively, up from sixth and seventh last year. The first brand gained 24.2% in value (to $46.57 billion) and the second has fallen in value by 5.4% (to $31.6 million).
The U.S. drugstore chain CVS, owned by CVS Health Corp. moved up to number six from number ten (+16.7%, to $30.57 billion).
Meanwhile, Chinese online retailers Taobao and Tmall, owned by Alibaba, fell to seventh and ninth from fourth and fifth last year. The value of the first brand fell by 43.2% (to $30.54 billion), the second – by 44.2% (to $27.43 billion).
Rounding out the top 10 is Walgreens, the U.S. drugstore chain which saw its brand go up 9.5% (to $21.56 billion) taking it from twelfth place the year before.
The highest position among European brands is occupied by a German discount supermarket chain Lidl which jumped to the twelfth place from the fourteenth.
The most significant growth in the value of the brand showed a Mexican chain of convenience stores OXXO, which operates throughout Latin America – 56%, to $2.3 billion. He got into the ranking this year and took 91st place.
Meanwhile, famous British online retailer ASOS dropped out of the ranking after its brand value collapsed by more than 40% (to $1.2 billion), the report said.
Among the 100 companies in the ranking of retailers Brand Finance 36 are American, eleven are German, nine are British and seven are Chinese.

Amazon to invest $35 bln in new data centers in Virginia by 2040

U.S. online retailer Amazon plans to invest $35 billion by 2040 to open several data centers (data centers) in Virginia, which will create at least 1,000 jobs, Governor Glenn Youngkin said. He said a number of locations within the state are being considered for now, with a final decision to be made later, MT Newswires reported.
Amazon is one of the largest private employers in Virginia, where the first Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud data centers were established in 2006. In 2018, the company opened a second headquarters in Arlington, which is located in that state. AWS Director of Economic Development Roger Wener said the division has invested more than $35 billion in Virginia since 2006 and contributed nearly $7 billion to the state’s GRP. For the third quarter of 2022, AWS revenue rose 27.5% to $20.54 billion, while Amazon’s like-for-like total was up 15% to $127.1 billion.
The company’s capitalization has fallen nearly 33% in the past 12 months (to $992 billion), while the Nasdaq stock index is down just over 19%.

Amazon to use Airbus for first time in partnership with Hawaiian Air

The world’s largest online retailer Amazon.com Inc. for the first time will ship its cargo on Airbus SE aircraft in cooperation with Hawaiian Air, owned by Hawaiian Holdings Inc.
In total, Amazon will lease 10 Airbus A330s from Altavair LP, the company said. Aircraft that were originally passenger aircraft will be converted into cargo ones. They will be flown by Hawaiian pilots.
The first deliveries are expected at the end of 2023.
In this way, Amazon intends to reduce its dependence on Boeing Co. airliners, of which there are more than 110 aircraft in its fleet. The company intends to begin replacing its existing Boeings, mainly 767 models, with Airbus aircraft within 1.5 years batches of aircraft from a European manufacturer.
Hawaiian was one of six bidders to win a contract with Amazon, said Sarah Rhoads, vice president of Amazon Global Air. The airline operates 13 Airbus A330 passenger aircraft.
Meanwhile, Amazon chose the A330 because the planes are easier to convert to passenger than Boeing 767s, Rhoads added. At the same time, despite the fact that the A330 is larger than the 767, Amazon will not use them to transport cargo from other companies.

AMAZON RECEIVES PEACE PRIZE FROM UKRAINE FOR SUPPORTING THE COUNTRY

Amazon received the Ukraine Peace Prize for supporting the country during the war unleashed by Russia, the award was presented by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Digital Transformation Mykhailo Fedorov during a meeting in Lugano (Switzerland).
“Amazon AWS has been actively supporting Ukraine since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion. The company helped save our digital infrastructure during the war. In particular, the migration of Ukraine’s state registries and critical databases to the Amazon AWS cloud environment was critical. And from the very first days of the war, it banned the registration of new customers from Russia and Belarus,” the message on the Telegram channel of the Ministry of Digital Transformation says.
The ministry notes that Fedorov also discussed with Liam Maxwell, Director of Government Transformation at Amazon Web Services, further cooperation in the areas of digital lending and the post-war reconstruction of Ukraine.
“Maxwell noted that the company is ready to help with technological solutions for the digitalization of the public sector and the judicial system,” the ministry said.
Ukraine Peace Prize is an award introduced by the President of Ukraine for companies and corporations, governments, officials, world politicians who most support Ukraine and help in the fight against the Russian aggressor.
As reported, Google was the first to receive the Ukraine Peace Prize. This award was also received by Microsoft.

STATE-RUN UKRPOSHTA OPENS ONLINE STORE ON AMAZON

An official online store of Ukrposhta has opened on the American e-commerce platform Amazon, the press service of the national postal operator reported on Tuesday.
Ukrposhta notes that on Amazon you can buy the “Russian warship … Done!” set of stamps, envelope and postcard, as well as branded goods, namely a sweatshirt, a T-shirt or a cap.
The company added that it will transfer $5 from each order with the “Russian warship … Done!” stamp to the account of KSE Foundation. All funds raised will be used to help schools and kindergartens, organizing the logistics of humanitarian cargo, humanitarian aid.
In addition, the new stamp “Ukrainian Dream” is available for ordering in the online store in a set, which is issued on June 28 to the Day of the Constitution of Ukraine.
The development of the store and the launch of the Ukrposhta brand on Amazon was carried out by the Disqover Agency team.

UKRAINIAN MINISTRY TO COOPERATE WITH AMAZON TO DEVELOP CLOUD TECHNOLOGIES IN UKRAINE

The Digital Transformation Ministry of Ukraine will cooperate with Amazon Web Services to accelerate the development of cloud technologies in the country, digital transformation and innovation.
The corresponding memorandum of cooperation was signed by Deputy Prime Minister – Minister of Digital Transformation Mykhailo Fedorov with Amazon in London.
“Another global technology giant has begun to work in Ukraine. The beginning of our cooperation is a positive signal to other large international companies and brands that it is possible and necessary to enter Ukraine,” he said on Telegram.
According to the minister, the ministry, together with Amazon, will develop skills in working with cloud technologies: Ukrainian universities will be able to join the AWS Academy program for free, modernize IT systems and agency policies in the field of cloud technologies; implement the ministry’s strategies for the development of IT infrastructure and the diffusion of cloud technologies (in particular, through the development of small and medium-sized businesses and start-ups that use cloud solutions).
“And this is just the beginning. I am glad to welcome Amazon in Ukraine,” Fedorov said.
