Death toll from Libya floods approaches 10,000 people

The number of dead as a result of flooding in Libya caused by Hurricane Danielle has exceeded 8 thousand people, more than 10 thousand residents are missing, Al Arabia reports.

“The death toll from the natural disaster in northeastern Libya has exceeded 8 thousand people. The number of missing people now exceeds 10 thousand,” a Libyan parliamentary advisor said in a statement.

Abdulmenam al-Ghaite, head of the municipality of the city of Derna, which has taken the brunt of the flooding, said it was predicted that the death toll from heavy rains and flooding could rise to 20,000.

Level of floods in Dnieper decreases

The water level of the Dnieper river in the capital near the Metro bridge has decreased by 4 cm compared to the previous day, the Kyiv city military administration said.
“As of 10:00 on 07.05.2023, the Dnieper in Kiev near the bridge “Metro” is 9,299 cm (according to the Baltic system of heights). Water temperature: 14°C. Compared to the previous day, the flood level has decreased by 4 cm,” – indicated in a message in the telegram channel.
The head of KHWA Sergey Popko noted that for more than 2 weeks the height of the flood in the capital fluctuates around 9300 cm, which is less than 60 cm maximum high water in the middle of April, so there is no threat to the city of high water. Emergency flooding in the city of Kiev has not been recorded.
“The danger level of hydrological phenomena remains I (yellow). At the same time there is flooding of the floodplain with a layer of about 45 cm. Floodplain areas remain flooded – islands in the park Muromets, Hidropark, Trukhanov Island, Galerny bay, Korchevatoe, private areas near Osokorki. Industrial facilities and residential massive cities are out of danger of flooding. Monitoring of the current floods continues”, – said Popko.

Red, the highest level of danger was announced in Cherkasy, Poltava, Dnipropetrovsk and Kirovograd regions due to active water growth in the spring flood, the head of the hydrological forecasts department of the Ukrhydrometeocenter of the State Emergency Service Ilya Perevozchikov said.
“An orange danger level has been declared in Kyiv and Chernihiv regions, and in Cherkasy, Poltava, Dnipropetrovsk and Kirovohrad regions a red danger level, the highest that can be,” he said in a video on the website of the Ukrhydrometeocenter.
According to a representative of the Ukrhydrometcentre, the formation of high levels of the spring flood in Chernihiv region is also observed.

Peak floods in Kiev expected in 5 days

The peak of the spring floods in the capital is expected by the end of April, tentatively – on April 22, the press service of the Kiev state city administration said.
“According to the Ukrhydrometeocenter, the peak of the spring floods in Kiev is tentatively expected on April 22,” said in a message in the Telegram channel on Monday.
It is noted that in the capital there is waterlogging of the territories of the island of Muromets Park, Gidropark, Trukhanov Island, Galerny Bay, Korchevatoe, private areas in the area of Osokorki.
The water level in 2023 is 0,5-1 m higher than last year.
The main reason for the floods is the spring flooding and regular precipitation in recent times, which led to an increase in water in the rivers.
“In addition, the level of the Dnieper in Kiev has always been regulated by the cascade of Dnieper hydropower plants. Unfortunately, to date, Kakhovskaya HPP does not work in full technological mode, so the other dams are trying to adjust this situation,” – noted in the message.
According to Ukrhydrometocenter, as of 12:00 on Monday, the water level in the Dnieper is 9,359 cm (the critical level – 9,415 cm) according to the Baltic system of heights.
“There is still 50-60 cm to the critical water level. We understand that the water can reach this level, so we conduct additional training of civil protection forces, rescuers and all services that may be involved in providing assistance to residents,” notes Roman Tkachuk, director of the Department of Municipal Safety of the Kyiv City State Administration.
Cases where the consequences of flooding caused damage to property or other damage to businesses will be considered in the work of the district commissions of technogenic and environmental safety and emergencies.
