Grain harvest in Ukraine is currently 12.8% lower than last year’s figures

As of August 15, farmers harvested 24.81 million tons of early grain and leguminous crops from 6 million 186.6 thousand hectares, which is 55% of the area sown with these crops, according to the Ministry of Economy.

Last year, as of August 16, 28.46 million tons of grain were harvested from 6 million 717.6 thousand hectares, which means that the current figures are 12.8% and 7.9% lower, respectively, and the average yield, which is 4.0 tons/ha, is 5.4% lower.

According to the Ministry of Economy, 18.99 million tons of wheat were harvested from 3 million 396.2 thousand hectares (last year – 21.68 million tons from 4 million 846.1 thousand hectares), barley – 4.73 million tons from 1 million 247.2 thousand hectares (5.48 million tons from 1 million 397.4 thousand hectares).

The average yield of these crops this year is 4.3 tons/ha and 3.8 tons/ha, respectively, which is 3.5% and 3.3% less than last year’s figures.

At the same time, this year’s pea harvest is already higher than last year’s – 0.57 million tons from 230,300 hectares compared to 0.46 million tons from 207,600 hectares, and the yield is 12.8% higher at 2.5 tons/hectare.

Other grains and legumes were threshed on an area of 310,800 hectares, with a harvest of 0.51 million tons (0.83 million tons).

It is noted that among the leaders are, in particular, the Odessa region, which harvested 3.43 million tons from an area of 1 million 70,400 hectares, the Kirovohrad region harvested 2.20 million tons from an area of 533,400 hectares, and the Vinnytsia region harvested 2.08 million tons from an area of 337,600 hectares.

In the Kirovograd and Dnipropetrovsk regions, buckwheat harvesting has begun (0.1 thousand tons, compared to 2.4 thousand tons on the same date last year), and 1.5 thousand tons of millet (9.5 thousand tons) have also been harvested, the Ministry of Economy added.

According to its data, the rapeseed harvest as of August 15 amounted to 3.01 million tons from an area of 1 million 184.8 thousand hectares, while last year on August 16, it was 3.36 million tons from 1 million 227.6 thousand hectares, and the average yield is 7% lower than last year’s on the same date and amounts to 2.5 tons/ha.

As reported, the National Bank of Ukraine, in its Inflation Report published at the end of July, lowered its forecast for this year’s grain harvest from 61.7 million tons to 57.9 million tons, and for oilseeds from 22 million tons to 21 million tons.

The NBU recalled that last year, the grain harvest in Ukraine fell to 56.2 million tons from 59.8 million tons in 2023, while oilseeds fell from 21.7 million tons to 20 million tons.

According to forecasts by Deputy Minister of Economy Taras Vysotsky, this year’s grain harvest will be about 56 million tons, the same as last year.

GRAIN HARVEST IN UKRAINE IN 2020 TOTALS 65.4 MLN TONNES

In 2020, Ukrainian agricultural producers harvested 65.4 million tonnes of cereals and legumes from an area of 15.3 million hectares. The operational data of the regions on the results of the harvesting campaign was announced on Tuesday by Minister of Development of Economy, Trade and Agriculture Ihor Petrashko.
According to a report on the ministry’s website, in particular, 25.1 million tonnes of wheat from 6.6 million hectares and 29.8 million tonnes of corn from 5.3 million hectares were harvested.
According to the State Statistics Service, in 2019 Ukraine harvested 75.1 million tonnes of cereals and legumes (70.1 million tonnes in 2018), of which 28.3 million tonnes of wheat (24.6 million tonnes) and 35.9 million tonnes of corn (35.8 million tonnes a year earlier).
“This year, the gross grain harvest amounted to 65.4 million tonnes, which is three times more than the needs of the domestic market, and also allows us to maintain a leading position in the export of agricultural products,” Petrashko said, commenting on the harvest results.
The Ministry for Development of Economy, Trade and Agriculture said that the barley harvest this year was tentatively 7.8 million tonnes threshed from 2.4 million hectares (in 2019, according to the State Statistics Service, 8.9 million tonnes from 2.6 million hectares).
In addition, 516,200 tonnes of peas were harvested from an area of 237,700 hectares (573,000 tonnes from 253,400 hectares), 106,500 tonnes of buckwheat from 78,500 hectares (85,000 tonnes from 69,200 hectares), and 244,000 tonnes of millet from 150,400 hectares (169,700 tonnes from 93,300 hectares).
The sunflower harvest this year preliminary amounted to 13.1 million tonnes from 6.4 million hectares (15.3 million tonnes from almost 6 million hectares), rapeseed – 2.6 million tonnes from 1.1 million hectares (3.3 million tonnes from 1.3 million hectares) and soybeans – 2.8 million tonnes from 1.3 million hectares (3.7 million tonnes from 1.6 million hectares).
Farmers also harvested 9.2 million tonnes of sugar beet from 216,000 hectares, compared with 10.2 million tonnes from 221,000 hectares last year.
The minister explained the decline in the harvest of most crops by atypical weather conditions, but stressed that traditionally agricultural production in Ukraine has a surplus.

NATIONAL BANK OF UKRAINE RETAINS GRAIN HARVEST FORECAST IN 2020

The National Bank of Ukraine (NBU) maintains its forecast for the grain harvest in 2020 at 72 million tonnes, Deputy Governor of the NBU Dmytro Sologub has said.

“The harvest is basically at the level of last year, the area planted with early crops was slightly less than last year, because more corn was sown, but the yield is almost in line with last year … We keep the estimate for this year’s harvest, respectively, at the level of 72 million tonnes,” he said during a press briefing of the National Bank.

He noted that the NBU also does not see a significant decrease in grain exports in comparison with the forecast.

AGRO-INDUSTRIAL GROUP ROSTOK-HOLDING REDUCES GRAIN HARVEST

Rostok-Holding agro-industrial group has completed harvesting early grain crops, threshing 69,400 tonnes against 71,100 tonnes in 2017. According to the group’s press release, winter wheat was harvested on an area of 6,700 hectares (in 2017 some 7,700 hectares). The gross yield totaled 40,900 tonnes (51,100 tonnes), the yield was 6.1 tonnes/ha (6.7 tonnes/ha). On some fields the yield reached 8.7 tonnes/ha.
The group increased the gross harvest of spring barley by almost 1.5 times, to 25,100 tonnes (in 2017 some 17,500 tonnes) from 5,100 hectares (3,300 ha). The average yield was 4.9 tonnes/ha (in 2017 some 5.3 tonnes/ha). On some fields the yield reached 6.7 tonnes/ha.
Peas were harvested on an area of 1,100 hectares (in 2017 some 1,000 hectares). The group harvested 3,400 tonnes (2,500 tonnes). The average yield was 3 tonnes/ha (in 2017 some 2.6 tonnes/ha).
In 2018 the share of winter wheat in the structure of the company’s areas under crops stood at 12%, spring barley at 9%, and peas at about 2%.
