The European Investment Bank (EIB) within the framework of the Ukraine Urban Public Transport project is providing Lviv with EUR 12 million loans for the purchase of ten new low-floor trams.
According to the press service of the Ministry of Infrastructure of Ukraine, the relevant agreement between the bank, the Ministry of Infrastructure and the city authorities was signed on September 2.
According to the ministry, another EUR 8.8 million will be additionally financed from the city budget.
Head of the European Investment Bank representative office in Ukraine Jean-Erik DE ZAGON said the EIB loan for new trams in Lviv will contribute to the development of environmentally friendly and sustainable transport. As representatives of the climate-oriented EU bank, they are convinced that a well-functioning tram network can make a significant contribution to reducing the number of cars on roads and thus reducing environmental pollution and mitigating climate change.
Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovy also supported this position.
“We have a clear position – electric transport should dominate. First of all, these are environmental issues, because 30% of all diseases in the world are caused by air quality. And secondly, it is financially profitable. In addition, low-floor trams and trolleybuses manufactured here, in Lviv, contribute to comfortable movement around the city for all its residents, including those with limited mobility,” he said.
JSC Ukrzaliznytsia for the upcoming Independence Day of Ukraine will launch additional high-speed trains No. 224/223 Odesa-Kyiv and No. 168/167 Lviv-Odesa.
According to the company’s press service, the trains will be launched due to an increased demand for passenger transportation services on holidays.
Train No. 224/223 will transport passengers between Odesa and Kyiv on August 22 and 24.
Train No. 168/167 will transport passengers between Lviv and Odesa on August 22, 24, 26, 28 and 30.

The epidemic situation in Volyn, Zhytomyr, Ivano-Frankivsk, Lviv, Odesa, Rivne, Sumy, Kharkiv and Chernivtsi regions does not meet the criteria for easing lockdown, the Health Ministry said on its website on Tuesday.
The occupancy of beds, in particular, exceeds the permissible indicator of 53.31% in Lviv region. However, in Odesa and Sumy regions, the dynamics of the spread of the disease exceeds the established value of 10%.
The percentage of disease detection is higher than the established value of 11% in Volyn, Zhytomyr, Ivano-Frankivsk, Rivne, Kharkiv and Chernivtsi regions.
As reported, the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine introduced adaptive lockdown until August 31, 2020, changed the principle of the distribution of regions to strengthen lockdown measures.
Depending on the epidemic situation in the region or individual administrative territorial units-districts, a “green,” “yellow,” “orange” or “red” level of epidemic danger of the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19) disease is established.

The Hungarian low cost airline Wizz Air has opened the second base in Ukraine at Lviv International Airport.
According to the press service of the Infrastructure Ministry of Ukraine, in July the company will operate five new flights from western Ukraine, in particular, from Lviv to Billund (Denmark), Tallinn (Estonia), Lisbon (Portugal), Hamburg (Germany), and Szczecin (Poland).
Wizz Air also plans to expand its route network by opening flights from Kharkiv to Tallinn and Berlin.
“The Ukrainian aviation industry needs to be restored as soon as possible for a further stable functioning and growth. Therefore, it is very pleasant that both Ukrainian and leading international airlines do not lose optimism during the coronavirus crisis, but rather seek new opportunities for development, opening up new popular directions. Wizz Air is a leading low cost company, which was one of the first to enter the Ukrainian market back in 2008,” Minister of Infrastructure Vladyslav Krykliy said.
It is expected that the opening of a new Wizz Air base will bring Lviv more than $100 million investment in 2020 and create more than 30 jobs.
“We are convinced that investments in opening the base and new routes will stimulate the development of the local economy, aviation and tourism,” Andras Sebok, the chief supply chain officer at Wizz Air, said.
The director general of Lviv Airport, Tetiana Romanovska, in turn, noted that 17 directions to different cities of Europe have already been opened from the airport.
The Hungarian low-cost airline Wizz Air on July 1, 2020 will open a new base at the Lviv International Airport, where it will place one Airbus A320 aircraft.
“It will become the second airline’s base in Ukraine. In addition, Wizz Air announces the opening of seven new routes to Billund (Denmark), Tallinn (Estonia), Lisbon (Portugal), Hamburg (Germany), Szczecin (Poland) from Lviv, and also from Kharkiv to Tallinn and Berlin (Germany),” the airline said on Wednesday.
The Lviv International Airport has launched the international freight transport program, the airport has said on its official Facebook page.
The first Lviv–Riga–Lviv flight was serviced on April 3, 2020.
“The cargo of the Ukrposhta company is transported by An-26 aircraft with the registration code UR-CSK of the Ukrainian transport airline Eleron,” the airport said in a statement.
The airport also said that freight transportation is a separate area of the enterprise.
“Last year, cargo was transported on the Kyiv-Lviv-Kyiv, Lviv-Dniptro-Lviv lines. It is time to expand horizons. Soon we are waiting for even more new international destinations,” the Lviv international airport said in the statement.
