Ukrainian seaports in January-November of this year handled 145 million tonnes of cargo, which is 1% more than in the same period last year, representatives of the Ukrainian Sea Ports Authority (USPA) said during the EBA Infrastructure Day on Thursday.
According to the USPA, the export of goods for 11 months-2020 increased by 3.6%, imports decreased by 8.3%, transit – by 10.3%.
“Exports increased due to such cargo as ore and metal, imports decreased due to ore and coal, transit decreased due to a reduction in ore supplies from the Russian Federation through the port of Pivdenny,” the USPA reported.
According to the published information, in the structure of cargo handling, grains make up 30% of cargo, ore – 28%, ferrous metals – 11%, containers – 8%, other bulk cargo – 6%, oil – 4%, etc.
Most of the cargo (28%) was handled by four seaports: Pivdenny, Mykolaiv, Odesa and Chornomorsk.
As reported, the seaports of Ukraine in 2019 handled 160 million tonnes of cargo, which is 18.4% more compared to 2018.
Mariupol seaport (Donetsk region) in January-September 2020 increased cargo transshipment by 16.5% compared to the same period in 2019, which is 5.335 million tonnes.
According to the website of the state-owned enterprise Ukrainian Sea Ports Authority, the port increased the transshipment of export cargo by 17.41%, to 4.461 million tonnes during this period, but reduced the transshipment of imported cargo by 36.84%, to 489,900 tonnes, and increased transshipment of cabotage goods by more than 83.5 times, to 384,200 tonnes. At the same time, the port did not handle transit cargo.
In terms of the cargo nomenclature in the nine months of 2020, Mariupol port increased the transshipment of liquid cargo by 10.91%, to 118,900 tonnes, reduced the transshipment of bulk materials by 2.71%, to 1.599 million tonnes, and increased the transshipment of packaged goods by 27.86%, to 3.617 million tonnes.
During this period, no containers were transshipped in the port.
As reported, the volume of cargo transshipment at Mariupol seaport increased by 10% to 6.484 million tonnes in 2019 as in comparison to 2018.
Mariupol seaport is one of the largest ports in Ukraine. Its capacity allows transshipping over 17 million tonnes of cargo per year. The port is open year-round for vessels up to 240 meters in length and up to eight meters draft. Its territory is 73.2 ha, and the length of the berthing line is 4.2 km.
Mykolaiv seaport in January-October 2019 increased transshipment of goods by 20% compared to the same period in 2018, to 26.951 million tonnes.
According to the Ukrainian Sea Ports Authority, for the specified period the port increased transshipment of exported cargo by 27%, to 21.109 million tonnes, imported goods by 5.1%, to 5.003 million tonnes, cabotage goods by 0.2%, to 838,010 tonnes. Transshipment of transit cargo in January-October 2019 was not carried out.
In January-October, transshipment of liquid cargo in the seaport decreased by 6.3%, to 2.228 million tonnes, dry bulk cargo increased by 24.2%, to 22.044 million tonnes, and packaged goods by 15%, to 2.679 million tonnes.
As reported, Mykolaiv seaport in 2018 raised transshipment of goods by 24.09% compared to 2017, to 29.2 million tonnes.
JV Nibulon LLC (Mykolaiv), one of the largest grain traders in Ukraine, has confirmed its intention to build a terminal in Mykolaiv for loading grains and oilseeds to river transport with a storage capacity of 120,000 tonnes of agricultural products.
“With this initiative, our company has been contacting the competent authorities since 2016, but this issue has not been resolved for more than two years. Despite this, we confirm our intention for the construction of this facility,” Nibulon said in a statement.
Nibulon confirmed its intentions in connection with the publication on the official website of Mykolaiv City Council of design documentation and a report on strategic environmental assessment. In particular, the matter concerns the construction of a terminal with an area of 5.67 hectares, a storage capacity of 120,000 tonnes of grain products, and an area for trucks of 2.5 hectares for loading grain and oilseeds to the Nibulon river transport.
JV Nibulon LLC was established in 1991. It is one of the largest operators in the grain market of Ukraine.
Ascet Shipping, a private port operator, in August 2019 increased grain transshipment in Berdiansk seaport to 204,100 tonnes, which is 90.3% more than in August 2018 (107,200 tonnes).
According to the company’s press service, with reference to the director of Ascet Shipping’s branch in Berdiansk, Viktoria Abreyeva, in August the stevedoring company simultaneously loaded four to five motor ships per day at Berdiansk seaport. According to her, the corresponding volume of transshipment was achieved thanks to the planning and distribution of resources.
“We tried to load the vessels as quickly as possible, because the queue at the port’s roads always had four to seven ships waiting to be docked … Our process of loading ships using the direct “vehicle-to-ship” option allows loading several ships at different berths at the same time,” she said.
In August 2019 the company handled barley, peas and wheat, while loading 28 ships.
Ascet Shipping operates in five ports (Mykolaiv, Mariupol, Odesa, Kherson, Berdiansk). In Berdiansk seaport, it carries out a full cycle of sea transshipment of goods.
