President of South Africa: First visit of Ukrainian President is historic

President of South Africa Cyril Ramaphosa called the visit of his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelenskyy to Pretoria “historic” as it was the first time the Ukrainian head of state had come to South Africa since the establishment of official diplomatic relations between the countries.

“This official working visit reflects our common desire to strengthen bilateral relations between our countries for the benefit of our peoples. This is in many ways a historic visit, because it is the first visit of a Ukrainian head of state to South Africa in 33 years since the establishment of official diplomatic relations between South Africa and Ukraine,” he said at a press conference with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Pretoria on Thursday.

According to Ramaphosa, he held “successful talks” with President Zelensky, during which the leaders exchanged views on how to strengthen and deepen bilateral relations between the two countries. They also discussed how ministers from both sides can work together to deepen and broaden these relations.

They also noted the growing interest in expanding relations in the areas of diplomacy, post-conflict reconstruction, development and empowerment of peoples, especially women.

“We also discussed opportunities for cooperation in areas such as agriculture, trade, education, infrastructure and energy, as well as other social issues,” the president added.

In addition, Ramaphosa noted the significant steps taken by Ukraine, and President Zelensky in particular, to expand relations with the African continent. These include the provision of grain in the food sector, the expansion of agricultural cooperation, and the opening of a grain hub to the port of Mombasa in Kenya.

According to him, today’s meeting provided an opportunity to discuss the common interest in promoting peace, security, stability and sustainable development on the continent, in Ukraine and around the world.

Zelenskyy considers holding elections after ceasefire

Ukraine is not ruling out holding elections in the near future (after a full ceasefire is established), The Economist writes, citing government sources.

“Government sources say that Mr. Zelensky called a meeting last week to instruct his team to organize a vote after the full ceasefire, which the Americans believe they can implement by the end of April (Easter Sunday, April 20),” the article says.

It is indicated that the first confirmation may appear on the eve of or on May 5, when the parliament is to vote on the extension of martial law, which expires on May 8.

As reported, Zelenskyy himself has repeatedly stated that elections are impossible during the war. Thus, on March 12, he said at a briefing: “After the war is over, martial law will be lifted, and after it is lifted, elections will be held in accordance with Ukrainian law. No one will postpone anything on purpose.”

Zelenskyy counts on Turkey as guarantor of Ukraine’s security

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy says that he is counting on Turkey, in particular, for security guarantees, taking into account its possible military contingent, as he informed his European partners.

“If we are talking about security guarantees, I told my partners: in my opinion, we have to count on Turkey, on the Turkish president. Why? Because it is very important who will be ready to give real numbers of the contingent – real people, military vessels,” Zelensky said at a press conference on Sunday.

He added: “With all due respect to everyone… we will have to think about certain logistical steps to understand who will be sitting at the negotiating table.”

Zelenskyy announces visits to UAE and Saudi Arabia at Munich conference

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy will visit the UAE and Saudi Arabia, but he will not meet with the Russians or the Americans.

“I have an official visit to the Emirates with my wife, the first lady, because we have a large humanitarian program, and the issue of prisoner exchange. Secondly, after that, I will visit Saudi Arabia with the same issues and another partnership with His Royal Highness. It will be for two or three days. I will have three meetings with President Erdogan in Turkey. I will not meet with the Russians, but I will not meet with the Americans there either,” Zelenskyy told reporters at the Munich Security Conference.

Ukraine has mineral resources, but “this does not mean that we give them away to anyone, even to strategic partners,” Zelenskyy says

Ukraine has mineral resources, but “this does not mean that we give them away to anyone, even to strategic partners,” President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says.

“We have mineral resources. This does not mean that we give them away to anyone, even to strategic partners. It is about partnership. Invest money. Invest. Let’s develop this together and make money. And the main thing is the security of the Western world, the European continent. That all this will not go to these thieves – Russia plus their allies,” Zelensky said in an interview with Reuters, which was posted on the telegram channel.

According to the president, Russia has seized less than 20% of Ukraine’s mineral resources.

“If we assume that about 20% of our land has been seized, they certainly have not seized 20% of our mineral resources. So far, it is less,” the President said.

At the same time, he emphasized that the rest of Ukraine’s resources are in dire need of protection: “We need to stop Putin and protect what we have.”

“A lot in Dnipro region, a lot in central Ukraine and in the west. Unfortunately, we lost coal, but I know that they also lost a lot there, because they did not know what to do with the mines, they flooded many of them,” Zelensky added.
