Capital investments of Vodafone Ukraine in 2022 amounted to about $100 million, not less than before the full-scale Russian invasion, NEQSOL Holding Ukraine regional director Volodymyr Lavrenchuk told the Interfax-Ukraine news agency.
“As a responsible investor in 2022, NEQSOL Holding supported the strategy of capital investments made by Vodafone Ukraine Group in the most difficult conditions at the level of last year. These are investments to provide communications for millions of Ukrainians and data transmission systems for various production and service sectors”, – said Lavrenchuk.
Investments were mainly used to maintain network stability and restore communications in the de-occupied territories, as well as to buy new equipment and improve the company’s coverage, the press service of Vodafone Ukraine specified.
“If during peacetime emergency works accounted for no more than 2% of all works, since the beginning of the full-scale Russian invasion they have taken up more than 95% of the time. Only for 9 months of 2022 more than 1 thousand repairs to restore damaged networks were carried out,” – noted in Vodafone Ukraine.
Since the beginning of the Russian invasion in Kyiv, Sumy, Chernihiv, Kharkiv, Zaporizhzhia, Donetsk, Mykolaiv and Kherson regions more than 500 Vodafone Ukraine base stations were damaged (of those that were able to survey). Operation of 577 base stations has been resumed, the company said.
According to the company, since March, Vodafone Ukraine has restored communications in more than 550 settlements, in particular in 123 towns and villages of Kherson region in the past week. Also 2.56 thousand kilometers of fiber-optic cable was renewed, the total length of unrecoverable and re-laid optics was 37 kilometers.
“Blackouts were an additional challenge. All equipment, except fiber optic, requires power supply and its absence is critical for network operation,” Vodafone Ukraine said, stressing that in order to ensure communication despite long blackouts they provide base stations with backup batteries, as well as use alternative power sources from diesel generators to solar panels.
Vodafone Ukraine in 2022 also invested in expanding coverage in the western part of the country, where most Ukrainians have moved since the war began. Since the beginning of the year, 150 base stations have been installed and a number of existing ones upgraded. In order to expand the 4G coverage 3.8 thousand base stations were installed, 250 new sites were built and 1.5 thousand 3G base stations were modernized.
Also the company continues to provide free services to Ukrainians, in particular in roaming, which has already been used by 14 million Ukrainians, the press service said.
The mobile operator “Vodafone Ukraine”, which is part of NEQSOL Holding (Azerbaijan), in January-June 2022 reached a revenue figure of UAH 9.916 billion, which is 3% more than in the same period of 2021 (9 .64 billion UAH) .
According to the operator’s financial report, its net profit for the specified period amounted to UAH 663 million (UAH 2.1 billion for the same period last year).
OIBDA exceeded UAH 5.76 billion. OIBDA margin increased by 2.1 p.p. up to 58.1%.
As emphasized in the message of the operator, emergency work on the network and its restoration, assistance to the country and customers, and mass migration of customers abroad have significantly affected the dynamics of key financial indicators.
The growth of part of the financial indicators in the first half of 2022 was achieved due to the successful results of the first two months of the year.
The operator’s capital investments in the first half of the year amounted to UAH 1.276 billion, which is 14% less compared to the same period last year.
“As of today, all elements of the core network are operating normally, Vodafone Ukraine has taken all the necessary steps to quickly switch to a backup scenario. The Vodafone Ukraine team is actively working to restore damage: about 87% of the network is working and this figure is growing “All critical elements of the technical and IT infrastructure have already been diversified. The approximate amount of asset losses is about UAH 806 million,” the company stressed.
Mass migration due to the war also significantly affected the size of the subscriber base – as of the end of July, the operator’s subscriber base amounted to 16.6 million customers, of which 1.76 million were forced to stay outside the country.
In addition, as of the end of July 2022, the company connected free services in the amount of UAH 270 million for 13 million customers in Ukraine. And abroad – in the amount of UAH 596 million for 1.5 million subscribers in 32 countries.
The operator also purchased 10 ambulances for the amount of UAH 23 million.
The volume of humanitarian and direct financial assistance of the company to the country is currently estimated at UAH 250 million.
In 2019, NEQSOL Holding, through Telco Solutions and Investments LLC, controlled by Bakcell, signed an agreement with MTS PJSC on the purchase of its telecommunications business in Ukraine. The deal for the purchase of Vodafone Ukraine was closed at the end of December 2019 with funding from J.P. Morgan and RBI, the price was $734 million, including a deferred payment of about $84 million.

Mobile operators Kyivstar, Vodafone Ukraine and lifecell together with the Ministry of Digital Transformation of Ukraine, the State Service for Special Communications and Information Protection of Ukraine, the National Commission for State Regulation in the Fields of Electronic Communications, Radio Frequency Spectrum and Provision of Postal Services together with the Ukrainian Association of Telecom Operators “Telas” announce the launch of national roaming in Ukraine.
“This means that subscribers can switch to the network of other operators if it is not possible to use the signal of their mobile operator. In the context of military aggression, mobile operators and the Ministry of Digital Transformation, State Service for Special Communications and Information Protection of Ukraine, the National Commission for State Regulation in the Fields of Electronic Communications and Telas have joined forces to ensure the continuity of communication services for their subscribers,” the joint statement said on Monday.
Starting today, national roaming between operators is launched in test mode.
“First of all, it will be connected in the zone of active hostilities (Kharkiv, Kherson, Sumy, Poltava, Dnipropetrovsk, Zaporizhia, Donetsk, Luhansk, Kirovohrad, Mykolaiv regions), then in Chernihiv, Zhytomyr, Cherkasy and Vinnytsia regions and subsequently throughout the territory Ukraine. That is, if the connection of one operator disappears, the subscriber will be able to manually connect the connection of another operator,” the message says.
Currently, national roaming is available for voice calls and SMS messages within Ukraine from all mobile operators.
For the reliable functioning of the network, operators will technically implement the possibility of using national roaming gradually. Initially, national roaming will be activated for subscribers of the contract form of service, and within the next three days, subscribers of prepaid communication will be connected.
What you need to know about using national roaming for subscribers:
– the name of the network may change to the one whose coverage is in use;
– national roaming does not require additional payment from subscribers;
– Calls and SMS are billed according to the terms of your operator’s tariff plan.
How to connect to another operator’s network:
1. Disable auto network selection, find and select an available network manually (Vodafone UA, UA-KYIVSTAR or LIFECELL). If registration fails, you need to try again or select a different network.
After connecting, it is necessary to check the possibility of passing a call, SMS.
If if is impossible to connect to the network of another operator, the subscriber should try to restart the phone.
Operators emphasize that it is important to try to return (connect) to the network of their operator every day. Manually or by enabling auto network selection.
“Please note that connecting national roaming involves a significant load on the networks of operators. This may affect the quality of some services,” the message says.
According to the results of April-June 2021, the Vodafone Ukraine mobile network operator reached a revenue figure of UAH 4.912 billion, which is 19% more than in the same period of 2020.
According to the operator’s financial report, its net profit for the specified period grew by 20% compared to the same period last year, to UAH 1.211 billion.
OIBDA increased by 31% and reached UAH 2.844 billion, OIBDA margin amounted to 57.9% (in the second quarter of 2020 it was 52.6%).
Vodafone Ukraine said that the main factor of growth was the increase in the consumption of communication services in voice & data tariffs. The gradual recovery in roaming revenues also contributed to the growth in revenues.
The emphasis on the development of 4G networks and the growth in the number of data users was reflected in the increase in consumption of data services and, accordingly, ARPU grew by 21%, to UAH 83.10.
The customer base of Vodafone Ukraine in the second quarter of 2021 slightly decreased – by 0.3%, to 18.9 million users.
At the same time, there was an increase in the segment of contract and corporate connections (from 2.1 million customers in the second quarter of 2020 to 2.4 million in April-June 2021), especially due to an increase in the number of new connections in the IoT segment.
In the second quarter of 2021, roaming revenues from own subscribers increased by 22%, and consumption growth was 57% compared to the third quarter of last year, traditionally the busiest period. “Data consumption in roaming in April-June 2021 exceeded the volume of the same period in 2019. The emerging trend allows us to hope that revenues from roaming will also return to the previous, precocious level next year,” the press service of the operator said.
Vodafone Ukraine also noted an increase in demand for services based on the Internet of Things (IoT) – the number of IoT users increased by 30% over the year, to 1 million.
According to the operator, the most popular IoT applications currently are: security, finance and retail, utilities, transport and logistics.
Vodafone Ukraine noted a certain revival in the mobile retail segment: according to the results of the second quarter, the company increased its profitability and revenue from the sale of equipment in its own retail network.
Capital investments of Vodafone Ukraine in the reporting period amounted to UAH 584 billion (a decrease of 18% compared to April-June 2020) and they are mainly aimed at developing high-speed Internet infrastructure. The company’s total investments in the construction of high-speed mobile Internet networks amounted to UAH 30.3 billion.
Vodafone Ukraine is the second largest mobile operator in Ukraine.
The mobile operator Vodafone Ukraine plans to acquire more than 50% of the shares of the telecom operator Vega (PrJSC Farlep-Invest).
A source in the relevant field told Interfax-Ukraine that the relevant documents are already being considered by the Antimonopoly Committee of Ukraine (AMCU).
Vodafone Ukraine does not comment on the deal.
Vega also declined to make comments.
The mobile operator Vodafone Ukraine during the first quarter of 2021 launched a high-speed mobile Internet network in more than 550 settlements of Ukraine.
According to the company’s press service on Thursday, to date, Odesa, Dnipropetrovsk, Ternopil, Volyn, Sumy, Vinnytsia, Kherson, Poltava, Cherkasy and Lviv regions are among the top ten regions in terms of 4G network speed.
Among the regional centers, the “fastest” cities were ranked as follows: Mykolaiv, Chernihiv, Rivne, Vinnytsia, Kherson, Dnipro, Odesa, Lviv, Zaporizhia and Cherkasy.
Vodafone Ukraine is the second largest mobile network operator in Ukraine.
