UN Secretary General will arrive in Ukraine on August 18

On Thursday, August 18, UN Secretary General António Guterres will take part in a trilateral meeting in Lviv with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Deputy Secretary General Stefan Dujjarik said on Tuesday.

“The UN Secretary General will arrive in Lviv on Thursday for a trilateral meeting with Turkish President Erdogan and Ukrainian leader Zelensky,” he said.

“The next day he will go to Odessa and visit the local port, one of the three busiest ports on the Black Sea,” he said.

Duzhzharik added that the UN expects a bilateral meeting between Guterres and Zelensky.

In Istanbul on July 22, with the participation of the UN, Russia, Turkey and Ukraine, two documents were signed on the creation of a corridor for the export of grain from three ports on Ukrainian territory – Chornomorsk, Odessa and Yuzhny.

Inflation in Ukraine in annual terms increases to 22%

The growth of consumer prices in Ukraine in July 2022 due to seasonal factors slowed down to 0.7% from 3.1% in June and 2.7% in May, returning to the level of the end of last year, the State Statistics Service reported (Gosstat) on Wednesday.

In July last year, inflation was 0.1%, so in annual terms, in July this year, it rose to 22.2% from 21.5% in June and 18% in May.

Core inflation over the past month also fell to 1.2% from 1.6% in June and 1.4% in May. However, taking into account the core deflation of 0.1% in July 2021 in annual terms, it increased to 16.7% from 14.9% in June and 13.7% in May.

Since the beginning of this year, for the first seven months, inflation in Ukraine amounted to 18.2%, and the base – 12.7%, said the State Statistics Service.

In the consumer market in July, prices for food and non-alcoholic beverages rose by 0.8%. Most of all (by 8.7%) the price of eggs rose. Prices for processed cereals, rice, pork, lard, fish and fish products, non-alcoholic drinks, bread and butter increased by 5.1-1.1%. At the same time, prices for fruits, beef and vegetables fell by 5.4–1.9%.

Prices for alcoholic beverages and tobacco products increased by 1.3%, incl. for tobacco products – by 1.8%, alcoholic beverages – by 0.8%.

Clothing and footwear fell in price by 3.5%, including footwear – by 3.8%, clothing – by 3.2%.

Transportation prices decreased by 0.3% mainly due to cheaper fuel and lubricating oils by 4.4%. At the same time, the cost of travel in road passenger transport increased by 2.9%.

In the field of communications, prices increased by 2.1%, which is associated with an increase in the cost of mobile communications by 4.1% and postal services by 2.6%.

As reported, in 2021 inflation in Ukraine rose to 10% from 5% in 2020 and 4.1% in 2019, while core inflation rose to 7.9% against 4.5% a year earlier.

The NBU predicts that inflation will accelerate to 31% this year, including up to 25.6% in the third quarter.

Salt deposit in Transcarpathia can fully provide Ukraine with technical salt

Kation Invest LLC (village of Tereblya, Transcarpathian region) has begun the development of the Bushty salt deposit on the territory of the Bushty community of the Tyachevsky district of the Transcarpathian region, which will fully meet the needs of Ukraine in technical salt, the head of the Transcarpathian Regional Military Administration (OVA) said. He specified that the company expects to produce the first batches of salt within six months. In total, the field allows to produce up to 150 thousand tons per month by underground extraction through boreholes located on the surface of the earth.

“Unfortunately, due to the hostilities in the Donetsk region, the Artemsol state enterprise, which provided 100% of the country’s needs, stopped. To fulfill certain tasks to cover the country’s food security, Transcarpathia was involved in this difficult, but extremely important work. After preliminary geological research, a colossal salt layer starting from 35m to 500m,” he said.

According to Mikita, Cation Invest has already begun engineering work on the construction of an access road, marking drilling sites, equipped housing for workers, and also purchased modern equipment for deep industrial drilling.

“According to experts, in six months we will have the first mined salt. The deposit will be able to meet 100% of Ukraine’s demand for technical salt supplied to hold roads in the winter. Now the country’s need for technical salt is up to 450,000 tons per season” , – the head of the OVA emphasized.

In addition, it is planned to develop the infrastructure of the enterprise for the production of table salt for the needs of the population.

“We provided the investor with the most favorable conditions, agreed to consider additional options within the industrial park, allowing the enterprise to develop faster,” Mikita summed up.

According to the Unified State Register of Legal Entities and Individual Entrepreneurs, Kation Invest LLC with an authorized capital of UAH 4.3 million was established in 2014, 95% of its shares belong to Valentin Kondratiev and 5% to Igor Gerey.

As reported, the state-owned enterprise Artyomsol (Soledar, Donetsk region), previously the largest salt producer in Europe, stopped work in April indefinitely due to the invasion of Ukraine by Russian troops. The production process at the enterprise is impossible due to the shelling of Soledar by the Russians, damage to its salt mines and infrastructure.

As a result, Ukraine was forced to buy salt from Poland, Romania and Hungary.

President of Ukraine speaks with Pope Francis over phone

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky had a telephone conversation with Pope Francis on Friday.

“Briefed him on Russian aggression against Ukraine, its horrible crimes. Grateful to the pontiff for his prayers for Ukraine. Our people need support of world spiritual leaders who should convey to the world the truth about acts of horror committed by the aggressor in Ukraine,” Zelensky said on Twitter.

Filatov Institute receives devices and medicines from Shelter Ukraine charitable initiative

The Institute of Eye Diseases and Tissue Therapy named after V.P. Filatov (Odesa) received medical devices and medicines as part of the Shelter Ukraine charitable initiative, which is being implemented by SiLab Ukraine, Valores Foundation, Teple Misto charitable organization, Vplyv charitable organization in cooperation with Razom For Ukraine.

The clinic told the Interfax-Ukraine agency thanks to this initiative, the institute, in particular, was able to obtain suture materials, medical devices and medicines.

The received medical devices and consumables are used, among other things, in corneal transplantation operations, said Halyna Drozhzhina, the head of the department of pathology and microsurgery of the cornea of the eye.

“Such interventions are almost always the patient’s last chance not to lose sight, and they can only be done with such tools,” she stressed.

She pointed out that during the COVID-19 pandemic and the start of the war, “people hesitated and turned to ophthalmologists at the wrong time.”

“The number of patients in need of such interventions has increased. Therefore, such assistance is extremely necessary for us, it will help prevent vision loss in dozens of patients from different parts of Ukraine,” she said.

The clinic stressed that during the war, the institute, like in peacetime, continues to provide highly specialized ophthalmological care to patients from all over Ukraine, including citizens who were evacuated from the zone of active hostilities.

Wisconsin Ukrainians Inc. jointly with Experts Club and Nasha Lepta charity project hand over humanitarian aid for children of Kyiv region

According to Experts Club founder Maksim Urakin, the humanitarian situation that has developed in Ukraine now requires more effective interaction between volunteers and the diaspora in the United States.

“We need to develop ties with organizations such as Wisconsin Ukrainians, inform them about the requests for humanitarian supplies we have today and that will also be in the near future. This will allow us to provide more effective assistance to our people affected by the war,” he explained.

The Nasha Lepta project provides assistance to families of internally displaced persons, families with many children, children with cerebral palsy and autism, as well as children with serious illnesses and disabilities.
