According to it, in 2020, the cargo turnover of carriers decreased by 14.3%, to 290.3 billion tonne-kilometers.
According to statistics, in 2020, some 305.5 million tonnes of cargo were transported by rail in domestic traffic and for export, which is 2.4% less than in 2019. Some 191.3 million tonnes (less by 21.7%) were transported by road, 5.6 million tonnes (less by 8.3%) by water transport, 97.5 million tonnes (less by 13.5%) by pipelines, and 100,000 tonnes (less by 6.7%) by air.
Nika-Tera Sea Terminal (Sea Specialized Port Nika-Tera, Mykolaiv), part of Dmytro Firtash’ Group DF, handled 409 vessels and 7.38 million tonnes of cargo in 2020, which is 15% lower than in 2019.
According to the company’s website, the main types of cargo handled in the port are grain, legumes and oilseeds, as well as their processed products.
In 2020, the port started handling oil products and resumed handling fertilizers.
“The coronavirus [COVID-19] pandemic and the drop in crop yields are the main reasons for the 14% decrease in cargo handling. In 2020, grain was the main type of cargo handled in the port. At the same time, the crisis helped us open a new ‘window of opportunity’: we are talking about the restoration of volumes of mineral cargo and bitumen handlings,” CEO of Nika-Tera Alim Agakishiev commented on the results of the past year.
The structure of the company’s cargo turnover in 2020 looked as follows: grain, legumes and oilseeds, as well as their processed products accounted for 75% (some 5.55 million tonnes) of handling; open storage bulk cargo for 18% (some 1.3 million tonnes); liquid cargo for 4% (some 323,000 tonnes) and mineral fertilizers for 3% (some 194,000 tonnes).
In 2020, the port handled 409 vessels (versus 410 in 2019), while increasing the number of processed bulk carriers of the Panamax type (with a tonnage of about 65,000 tonnes) by 44% from 16 to 23 units.
In total, 63,114 rail cars and 65,910 vehicles were handled in the port.
Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, the port was able to ensure 100% retention of the company’s personnel and large-scale assistance to the city’s healthcare sector in the fight against COVID-19.
“We believe in a gradual recovery of the market, economy and, accordingly, the volume of cargo turnover in 2021. However, much will depend on weather conditions and the yield of key crops in this marketing year,” Agakishiev said.

JSC Ukrzaliznytsia in 2020 transported more than 40 million tonnes of cargo to the countries of the European Union, 10 million tonnes of which were transportation to Poland and back.
As the Ukrzaliznytsia’s press service of said on Friday, exports to the EU countries, in particular, amounted to almost 29 million tonnes, imports almost 4 million tonnes, and transit about 7.5 million tonnes.
Poland, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Italy and Romania are included in the top 5 EU countries in terms of cargo transportation by Ukrzaliznytsia.
Ukrzaliznytsia also noted an increase in transportations to and from Romania by 21.2%, to almost 4 million tonnes in 2020.
As reported, Ukrzaliznytsia transported in December 2020, according to recent data, 26.65 million tonnes of cargo in all routes, which is 7.4% more than the same period in 2019.
The seaports of Ukraine in 2020 handled 158.86 million tonnes of cargo, which is almost equal to the figure for 2019, the press service of the Ministry of Infrastructure reported, citing Minister Vladyslav Krykliy.
“Despite the pandemic and the crisis in 2020, the seaports of Ukraine continued to operate and made great efforts to maintain a sufficient level of transshipment. The result of this work is almost 160 million tonnes of cargo handled per year, which practically reaches the pre-crisis level last year. 2020 was the year of signing first concession agreements in the maritime industry in the ports of Olvia and Kherson with an investment of UAH 3.7 billion for their further modernization and development. And we continue to work on new concessions in the region in 2021,” he said.
The ministry notes that over the year, the transshipment of exported cargo increased to 122.84 million tonnes (1.5% more), cabotage cargo to 2.37 million tonnes (10.7% more). At the same time, negative dynamics of import and transit cargo was recorded.
Most of all the ports handled grain and ore with 48 million tonnes and 44.22 million tonnes, respectively. At the same time, the transshipment of ore over the year increased by 18.5%, ferrous metals by 8.6%, and oil by 2.2 times. Transshipment of containers reached 1.05 million TEU and exceeded the previous year’s figure by 4.1%.
As reported, the seaports of Ukraine handled 160 million tonnes of cargo in 2019, which is 18.4% more compared to 2018.
