According to Serbian Economist, Hungarian low-cost carrier Wizz Air has stated that changes to Serbian aviation legislation could force the company to close its Belgrade hub as early as November 2026.
The carrier believes that the new rules could restrict competition in favor of Air Serbia and contradict Serbia’s obligations within the European Common Aviation Area.
Wizz Air has been operating in Serbia since 2010. According to the company, it has carried over 14 million passengers during this time and currently serves 29 routes to 26 European cities. If the base is closed, more than 150 jobs in aviation and related jobs in tourism, the hotel industry, and airport services will be at risk.
The Serbian aviation regulator rejects the allegations. The Directorate of Civil Aviation of Serbia states that no airline is prohibited from operating flights between Serbia and the EU, and that the new rules merely clarify the regulatory framework and apply equally to all carriers.

Hungarian low cost Wizz Air launches flights from Lviv to Larnaca
The Hungarian low cost airline Wizz Air on Monday, October 28, launched direct flights from Lviv to Larnaca (Cyprus).
According to the airline’s reservation system, flights will be operated twice a week on Mondays and Fridays. The flight duration is three hours.
The cost of one-way ticket without baggage is UAH 709.
As reported, from March 2020 Wizz Air launches flights from Zaporizhia to Gdansk, Wroclaw, Krakow (all based in Poland), Vienna (Austria), Vilnius (Lithuania), and Budapest (Hungary).
Wizz Air, the largest low cost carrier in Central and Eastern Europe, offers flights on more than 600 routes from 25 bases, connecting 145 destinations in 44 countries. The airline fleet consists of 120 Airbus A320 and Airbus A321 aircraft.
Hungary’s low cost airline WizzAir is interested in flying to the Kherson airport, Wizz Air Executive Vice President and Deputy Chief Executive Officer Stephen Jones said at a press conference. “We had a very interesting and productive meeting with representatives of the Kherson airport. We are working on this issue. I am considering the possibility, but if I’m not mistaken, it is very important to have a runway in Kherson to service our planes. This is an excellent region,” Jones said.
He also said that he was pleasantly surprised by the professionalism of the airport team and expressed hope for future cooperation, but refused to specify the possible dates for the beginning of this cooperation.
WizzAir is the largest low cost airline in the Central and Eastern Europe. It offers flights from 142 airports in 44 countries. Its fleet consists of 100 Airbus A320 and Airbus A321 planes.
